I have just sorted out out a similar problem with my 318i M40. It had a misfire at idle, and an intermittent (quite violent) misfire under load. Like you I changed plugs, leads, distributor cap, rotor arm, checked all the hoses for air leaks etc but it was still the same. I booked it in for a crypto...
