Re: 3.73, 3.91 or 4.10 diffs on an M40 316

Thanks guys! I know there's more to it (engine speed vs torque @ the crank not being flat for one), but assuming you're in a relatively flat mid-band and within 500RPM on either diff, wouldn't dropping 4.27 to 3.73 only mean a decrease of about 14% wheel torque for a given road speed and gear? I sup...

3.73, 3.91 or 4.10 diffs on an M40 316

Has anyone actually tried a lower ratio diff on an M40 1.6? The numbers say that dropping from a 4.27 to a 3.73 would take 500 RPM off cruising speed in 5th, which would be good: 70 @ 3000RPM. In fact, all speeds in all gears look less frantic. First is way too short as it is, so any slight increase...

From memory the speedo sender just shorts the two wires together. The speedo itself floats a small voltage on one wire, which is pulled to ground by the sender causing a current pulse that gets detected and processed.

At source, it's 9 pulses per wheel rev. Exact pulses per mile is dependent on wheel size, tyre pressure, tyre tread etc.

But, at the sink, the small print on the speedo says how many it expects to see per mile ('K=xxxx'):

Pipework etc. all the same, but the rear box is slightly bigger on the 318 and needs different hanging brackets.

I found this out the hard way.

It can be adjusted - there's a screw on the speedo circuit board.

You have to take out the clocks and it'll be a bit hit and miss unless you have a frequency generator to hand though: http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... pic&t=2549

Subframe bush alignment

Should the drawn line run from front-to-rear or left-to-right?

...or does the shape of the bush only allow mounting in one position anyway?

Re: Dashboard Cracks

Aah, a subject I've spent too much time on. My '94 had an unusually long and deep crack in the normal place when I got it. The filler that had been put in there looked rubbish. I replaced it with an '84 one that had an almost invisible hairline crack. A year later that had grown out of the pocket re...

The lithium cells have a shelf life of about 10 years. In the SI board application they'll most likely die due to old age rather than being drained. New cells are about Ԛ£6 each.

A ding to the arch is most likely a crease which won't pull. Filler is probably the only way to get it 100% again.

Don't think the E30 OBC will do it as such. You can set a limit and listen for the gong, but it's not a readout. True, it should be a good indication of speedo error. The 8 series OBC test mode gives a live readout via the ABS sensors  About the OBC error: the diff gives 9 pulses per wheel rev...

BMW Silber is a light grey. Lighter than the carpet. Like the grey used in Windows for the taskbar and window backgounds.

That kick panel colour is for E30s that have light grey handbrake console, glove box & dash(?). M3 and motorsport cabs only I think.
