Re: EWS problem.
Thank you for your replies. I am aware of needing a re-syncing sometimes and I can do it with INPA. However I can't get INPA to communicate with the EWS module. There is a connection from the EWS module to the Instruments via the K-Bus... X10116. But the Diagnostic port is not on that bus, it is on ...

EWS problem.
Just fitted a M52TUB28 into an E30. This is the second E30 I have done this swap to and all went fine the first time. The first time I deleted the EWS and all was well. This time I thought I might leave the EWS in place and try and get it to work. The car started and ran well although there was a st...

Re: M42 overbore problems.
Interesting. Maybe 86mm would be a safer bet.
I can't find any difference in the cylinder wall thickness between the blocks so maybe 85mm was the max BMW would risk!

Re: M42 overbore problems.
Thanks for reply. We were going to use the S54 pistons with machined tops; unsure about rods at present. Had a close look at stripped bare M42, 43, 44 blocks and they appear to be extremely similar if not quite identical. Mostly some of the bosses have threads on some blocks but not on others. Proba...

M42 overbore problems.
Trying to build a 2.1 M42. Got the correct M47 crank and modified the end. Asked my engine man to bore the block out to 87mm. Got to the last bore and it broke through to the water jacket. Scrap block. See pic. IMG_20200426_180254 My questions are: Is this common or were we just unlucky? Are some bl...

Clio servo.
Managed to break my Clio servo and am now hunting for another one. Been round some scrappies and all the Clios I could find had a different shape servo compared to the (broken) one I have. Mine has been painted so I have no part number but I read on another post that the part number required is 8200...

Re: Accelerator cable.
Thanks for reply. I agree but unfortunately the donor car cable is lost. I have now made a cable out of an E36 318Ti Compact cable. I machined the bar down to fit on the throttle body and fitted an extra adjuster piece from an E30 M40 cable, by cutting a slot down it. This then takes up the extra sl...

Accelerator cable.
I have fitted an M52TU to my E30. Nearly finished, engine running, but having trouble with an accelerator cable. The engine end has a ball rather than a pin to secure on the throttle body and I cannot find one. I may have to modify one but thought I would ask here first. I know this is the M54 forum...

Re: Key number.
Thank you for your answers, unfortunately they were of no help as i didn't fully explain the problem. We have a 1990 318iS bought as a bare shell and built up to a complete car. A lock set came with the shell and are probably the original set. Two pattern keys came with the locks so we bought a BLAN...

How do you find your vehicles original key number?

Is it related to the VIN number?
Thanks,

No, I haven't even got the sump on yet.
I don't understand why the 728 bits work but if they do then fine!
I do know though that what I have done will work.

Re: Oil pump etc for a M52TU28.
Sorry for lateness in getting back to you. I think I have solved the problems. There is a definite lack of knowledge regarding M52TU and M54 engines, hopefully the following will go some way towards rectifying that. The M52TU and the M54 are quite similar but not identical, but they are quite differ...

Oil pump etc for a M52TU28.
I have a problem finding the right combination of oil pump, pick up pipe and drive chain for my September 1998 alloy blocked M52TUB28 engine. I bought an E34 sump and dipstick which are fine. However, when I opened up the engine there is a large aluminium windage tray/oil scraper made as one unit wi...

E36 arm query.
Putting a M52TUB28 into an E30. I have found that the nearside alloy engine mount arm (E36 - correct part number on arm) only lines up 3 of the 4 bolt holes on the block. The fourth one is about 1/2 bolt out. Obviously I can elongate the arm hole and all's well, but what I want to know is: Is this n...

As a further update I have discovered that there is a one way valve built into the expansion tank.
This explains why even BMW left the pipe open before the carbon canister came along.

Thanks for the reply, sorry for late response. I have taken some time to work out exactly how the whole fuel filler/breather/expansion system works. I noticed on OEM that the early M40 cars, say 1988, don't have a carbon canister but the piping is installed from the expansion tank to the engine comp...

Blanking carbon canister pipe.
I have read that you shouldn't blank off the pipe when removing the carbon canister. Having inspected where the pipe goes and the fuel expansion tank system I blanked mine off and have suffered no ill affects. I am about to do the same on my sons' 318iS; in fact I am removing the pipe all the way to...

Thank you all.
I think the way forward is to modify a mil light symbol and put it in along the bottom in place of the glow plug light, say.
Wiring is easy so that is what I will do.

Re: Engine check light.
I see....so are there no E30's that have a window with "Engine Check" on it?
If not I must be thinking of E36 instruments before the standardized engine picture appeared and was called the MIL lamp.
Still need a window with "Check" on it though, wiring etc not a problem.
Thanks for reply.

Engine check light.
Transplanted an M42 from an E36 into an E30 complete with EWS and DME from E36. No issues whatsoever at the moment but it seemed a shame not to utilise the Engine Check warning light function from pin 8 on the E36 DME. Unfortunately the E30 i am using has no Engine Check window installed in the appr...

Whilst I prepare for my M40 to M42 swap, I have acquired two exhaust manifolds, one for an E30 M42 and one for an E36 m42. The little white clips that secure the brake pipes to the trailing arms are mostly brittle and broken. These are the ones that screw onto the little metal studs on the arms.

Doing a bit of brake pipe work and I have noticed that some of the little hoops that locate the flexis are mild steel and some are stainless.

Where can I get the stainless ones if not available from BMW?

If I remember correctly the codes for these...
