Re: Rear Shock Protection Tubes

I've got a set of B4's from Demon Tweeks. I posted the find on here weeks ago. I just wanted some protection tubes without paying around £40 for a pair which are metal. I've ordered a set for a Toyota Corolla so will post my findings when they arrive... :D

Rear Shock Protection Tubes

Does anyone know where I can get a set of protection tubes for the rear shocks other than originals? I can't get them off my old shocks and would prefer plastic ones. I've ordered a Boge set off ebay but they are wrong, they actually fit the front of an E36. Also got the same problem with a set of F...

Re: What a day!

I was hammering the cv joints into the new hubs. A stupid move really. Next time I'll take the trailing arms off the subframe and place the hubs on a solid surface to absorb the impact.

Appletree, I'm jealous of your welding a metal fab skills. luckily, I've not had a lot of welding to do.

BAD DAY!
I was trying to fit my drive shafts and have knackered the wheel bearings. Not arsed about buying another set. Just pi**ed off I now have to strip it down and fit the buggers!

Re: What a day!

Thank you for the praise. Hopefully I'll get the rear axle back on the car this weekend. I've refurbed the driveshafts and (finally) got them back together!

Re: New bolts need for rear subframe

The trailing arm bolts (33321136406) cost me £7.39 each from BMW. Can't remember if that's before or after VAT.

Fitted the new fuel tank. The rear axle is also coming together.

Re: What a day!

Cleaned up one of the trailing arms this morning with a wire brush on the grinder. They're pretty unsightly but clean up nicely. Strangely, it was dripping a bit of oily fluid out of a small hole when the arm was tipped up.

Re: What a day!

It's been quite some time since I last posted an update on here. The work has moved at a glacial rate, but I've been back at it with greater enthusiam for the past 4 weeks. I've now got the back half of the chassis stripped, and treated with rust encapsulator. Just got a couple of small welding jobs...

My drained oil was black and smooth which had me wondering how old it was. I can't imagine the last owner had ever changed it but at least it wasn't brown or anything nasty looking.

The flushing was just an idea. If it's not necessary I won't go down that route. Will just fit new axel seals, plate gasket and top up with new oil. Thanks for the pointer.

Differential Flushing and Oil

I've just drained the differential off my 325i and wondered if it's worth flushing it out with a cleaner? If so, what would be an ideal product to use? Any recommendation on the replacement oil would also be handy. :)

Re: Replacement panels

My E30 came with one aftermarket wing and it was an awful fit around the grille. I've since replaced both with a couple of used genuine ones off ebay. Cleaned them up and sealed the insides, jobs a good 'un! I've used these guys for a couple of bits in the past: http://www.carz2.co.uk/3-series-83-to...

Bilstein B4 Shocks

I've just ordered a new pair of Bistein B4 rear shocks for my E30 from Demon Tweaks. They selling them for £36.61 each and £60.80 for the fronts. Seems like good discounts. Just thought I'd let you know if anyone is thinking of getting any... :D

Magpie, I've got some wire brush attachments for my drill, but even using them on a mains drill doesn't seem to be tough enough compared to a grinder. Hopefully the chemical method will make life easier.

I did buy a blowtorch thinking about burning the sealer off but maybe that's a bit agressive. I've ordered some Nitromors so will see how I get on with that. Think my neighbours will appreciate the quieter approach :D

Stripping the underside of the chassis.

Well, I've started the laborious task of stripping the underside of my car. I'm using my grinder with the flapdiscs and twisted wire wheel, which seems to do a decent job. Just wondered if anyone has any tips and tricks for getting into the tight spots where the grinder can't reach? I have a small D...

Re: What a day!

Thanks, I'm looking forward to getting the work done and just enjoying using the car. The costs are rising on mine but with slow(ish) work progress, the buying is spread out a bit more. Wouldn't a cream interior get grubby quickly? I'll be getting a leather retrim later down the line.

Got the brackets off those pins by prising them apart. I was about to ask about the cable sheath into the back of the trailing arms. Are they threaded/screwed in? They're certainly rusted. May do what you say and cut the cables.
