Re: Washer motor turns on by itself
Wise words, and confirmed today in heavy rain. Ironically the problem seems to occur when it's really wet. ie when you least need to use the washers... A clue, I think - but only someone with an in depth knowledge of the e30's electrics could appreciate ;)

Re: Rush of air when opening fuel filler cap
Hi Brian. No cat or lambda. I guess that probably means no carbon canister. I've noticed a smell of fuel too when the engine's cold. The tank was replaced recently, but that was a few months ago. The problem only start recently. It might coincide with having the inlet manifolds off to replace the ru...

Rush of air when opening fuel filler cap
The last few times I've filled up my 318is with fuel, when I've unscrewed the filler cap I've noticed a massive rush of air into the tank. Based on what I've read in other forums, I'm guessing there's a problem with the system for equalising pressure in the tank as fuel is pumped out. Maybe due a bl...

Re: Washer motor turns on by itself
Thanks for the reply Brian. Only just got round to checking this out. Reseating the relay caused the wipers to work only on one speed to start with, and no washer jets. Reseating again and everything's back to normal. The problem hasn't come back since. There was no sign of debris or metal below the...

Washer motor turns on by itself
Recently, whilst the wipers have been on, the washer jets have fired up for about 10 seconds on their own, and then stopped. It was kind of entertaining to start with, but it's starting to get a bit annoying now! Waggling the stalk doesn't seem to make any difference. I'm guessing perhaps an iffy re...

What wheels are suitable for winter tyres
I'm looking at getting a set of winter tyres to get me out of Buxton in the snow (I know it's a bit early yet, but this is Buxton!). Knowing a narrower section works better in the snow, are there any other wheels, eg vw golf which have the same fitment? I'm not too bothered about the offset as long ...

318iS fuel tank from ECP looks wrong type
I've removed the fuel tank from my 318iS, and had bought a new tank from ECP to replace it. With the two side by side I can see there are some major differences: - The original has one hole in the top, for the fuel pump. The new one has an extra similar hole on the top, at the other end. - The origi...

Looking on m42club.com, other M42 owners who've done this report a much noisier clutch after the mod, at certiain engine speeds. Re: 318is clutch replacement - opportunity for other jobs?
I'm considering doing the job myself, but I'm not sure I've enough spare time. How long does a clutch change take? Also, the weather's not too predictable at the moment either, so might bite the bullet and take it to a local garage - I'm lucky enough to have found a good one. Need to make sure I buy...

318is clutch replacement - opportunity for other jobs?
I've not yet looked at the Haynes manual, but I'm guessing there will be a fair amount of disassembly of other bits - exhaust, prop-shaft, gearbox. While I'm in there are there any parts I should consider replacing, eg bushes, mountings, bearings etc? It could be a good opportunity to do a bit of pr...

Clutch Judder & Axle Tramp
These two problems started recently at around the same time on my 318is. The clutch judders on take off unless I raise the revs to 2k before dropping the clutch. I do not get clutch slip, only judder. Also the rear left wheel bounces when I get wheel-spin at take-off, eg when taking off/turning from...

318is exhaust - oem vs supersprint
Can anyone comment on how the oem 318is exhaust (centre and rear) compares to the supersprint? I'm interested in comparisons in: - Performance - Sound - Looks - Durability (I think the oem mid section has s/s pipe, supersprint is ally coated steel) I need to replace the whole lot soonish to get it t...

Looking at realoem http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=18&fg=20 I'm guessing I need parts 8,9,10,11, 12 (and 14!)
Probably 15?
Any other bits?
Thanks!

Are you sure they're quoting for the right part? I think it's part 3 here:
RealOEM
Which is listed as $18.
Sounds like they might be quoting for the trim panels or weatherstrip which are $100's

Re: all e30s comes with central locking ?
In '84 central locking was available, but not standard. I had a non CL '84 316 myself once. Maybe you have it but it's not working. One easy way to check its to look at the boot catch, on the inside. If it's CL you'll be able to see the CL solenoid below it (behind the number plate). If it's not wor...

Re: 318iS Consumption
To start I'm going to fit a standard air box - the previous owner fitted a K&N cone filter. That may help.
I could do with knowing how to check the other things though, ie coolant temp sensor, AFM and TPS. Can anyone advise?

Re: Waterpump
FYI I found the problem with mine was not the water pump itself, but the large rubber o-ring around the pump, which makes a seal between it and the engine. It seems the o-ring supplied with the pump from ECP was thinner than the oem one - by a couple of mm. I could push the pump into the housing by ...

Reducing transmission slack?
My 318is has lost some of that taut springiness it had when I got it - I'd like to get it back! I'm talking about the slack you notice if you go off/on/off/on on the throttle. Not that I do that very often, but that gives you an idea of what I'm talking about! Basically I've noticed my car jolts mor...

Re: scary moment - sudden loss of electrics
There's another good reason for a battery to be secured. A year or so ago, a car ran into a telephone pole at the end of my lane. Not a particularly severe accident - no significant injuries, but the (unsecured) battery flew out of the car, across the road, totally cleared the roof of a house, and ...

Check your Idle Control Valve. Mine suffered build up of gunge which stopped it operating properly.
Take it off the car, give it a couple of taps on the floor, squirt in a bit of wd40, and try again. Mine runs lovely now.

Had a scary one last week - took the car out for a drive on an unlit road on a very black night. Coming down a hill I suddenly lost all power and the brakes started fading.
