More on the rust... When I took the carpet up I found a previous repair, that was supposedly decent. Really finding it hard to find the time to make updates, but I’m trying my best! Basically, the majority of progress so far has just been stripping the car down. After I got the head off the engine, the block had to come out. To do this, I removed all the remaining ancillaries, unbolted the gearbox ...

A quick update, I did a little welding work on the drivers side sill (I couldn't resist!). Someone had used the wrong jack on the sill and crushed it, so I decided to cut it out and weld in a piece of angle iron. The welding isn't great but I thought I'd get the practice in on somewhere that won't b...

Sorry for the delay posting. I decided to take the drivers seat out and take a look why its not operating as it should. It is very stiff and doesn't recline, raise/lower, slide as it should. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p52/joshua_147/2014-03-22122319_zps4fd541cb.jpg You can see how rusty the ...

I started in the engine bay by removing the battery, leads, coils, fan, shroud, pipes, air box etc. This is all fairly straight forward stuff so I thought I'd skip over this part. The exhaust manifold needed to be split from the head, so I decided to remove it altogether. The studs in the manifold, ...

Good luck with it, the engine conversion itself isn't too hard. Thanks, it'll be the first non-standard swap I've done so we'll see how it goes. As for engine choice, I have seen many m60b30's for very cheap. Have they got the same block as the b40's, except for the smaller bore and stroke? I am th...

A hybrid engine? No, just look for an M62 engine, they come in 4 flavours, 3.5L, 4.4L, 4.6L and 5L. Sorry I just got confused because you said m60b44 ;) heheh Joking aside, apparently they are more expensive than the m60 engines, and are harder to fit etc. If one comes up, then price may be the dec...

Next up, I removed the headlights, grilles and bumper mounts. 3 bolts hold each headlight assembly on, and the grilles are held on by a number of screws and also clips along the top edge. The bumper mounts are pretty easy, 2 bolts hold each one on. Ok, next things to come off were the wings. I remov...

First thing to come off was the bonnet. The arm that holds the bonnet in place was disconnected, and the 6 bolts holding the bonnet on were removed. I didn't mark the position of the bonnet as I'll be adjusting this anyway. The bonnet 'arm' was also removed, I think this is only held on with one bol...

My 318is build thread + M60B40 swap

Hi everyone, I’m now onto my second e30, but have bigger and better plans for this one. First a little bit about myself, and my first e30. I bought a 316i coupe in brilliant red around 18 months ago. It was in a tatty state, and quite a bit needed doing to get it up to scratch. At the time, I was 18...

Re: 316i overheating?

sorry, no it wasn't pressurized because i left the cap off. i found out that the boiling temp rises when under pressure so i gave it a bit more of a chance to level out in temp. so i tried idling the car outside for 15 mins, it rose just above the 3/4 mark and then cooled down to the half mark again...

Re: 316i overheating?

after the 3/4 mark the coolant starts to boil and overflows from the tank. If the system is under pressure wont something burst when the coolant rapidly expands? 316i overheating?

hi guys, got the car running finally and have found a problem. Now that the temperature gauge is fixed i have found out that the car is overheating. Re: 316i cranks but wont start?

I tested the injectors by cranking the engine and holding a pipe to my ear to listen for the clicking. I've found the solution to the problem, but it was a really strange solution. The firing order for this engine is 1,3,4,2 i believe, so i kept this in the same order around the rotor, but by puttin...

Re: 316i cranks but wont start?

so from what your saying, the pressure regulator controls pressure out of the fuel rail and back to the tank? so the supply pipe should connect to the metal pipe, and the return should connect to the plastic pipe.

Hi guys, I bought a 316i recently and decided to fix it up a bit. The temp. sensor to the dash wasnt working, so I replaced both of the sensors on the block. Power steering wasnt working but i havent got round to that yet. I changed the timing belt and all the idlers and the tensioner. When it comes...
