318is -- battery in the front?

In the UK, were 318is cars all equipped with the battery in the front? It seems that all the pictures I see of M42 cars have the battery under the bonnet. Also, do UK cars have any tar/sound deadening in the trunk? For the US market all 318is cars had the battery in the trunk with no trunk tar. (exc...

Re: Show off your Alpine 318is

i do like these in white, interesting on the difference between white/black lip, whats the standard ? The lip was body color from the factory. Over the years the flat black job became common so that it followed the black rockers and rear valance. Body color is the only way, IMO. Thanks for the pics...

Re: OE Black Headliner (non-M)

Great, thanks for the info fellas. Here in the U.S. the only non-M black headliners came in 318is cars and were a 'check-option'....I'm not really sure what this means. The current parts book and the original E30 parts fisch list several part numbers for Schwarz or Anthracite headlining pieces....al...

OE Black Headliner (non-M)

Just curious, how often do you guys see the OE (schwarz) black headliner on 318is cars? Do you see them in any other models? Sports?

Cheers,

Re: Stroker M50: 3.1lt Can it be done?

So i've been pondering this for a bit now. I was thinking of using a 89.6mm throw crank from a M54 and 86mm pistons from a S50b30. That should give me 3.1lt. I figure it should be possible but is it possible using all BMW parts? I'm not sure on the gudgeon pin heights, I know the M50 has a flat top...

Right on. The weight is considerably more than an M50 and the power potential just isn't there, assuming normal aspiration.

It's pretty easy to get 230whp from an M50 using a 85.8/89.66 crank, while weighing close to 100 pounds less than an M30.

Re: m50 into a 318is

Our first M50 swap was a non-VANOS 2.5L in an '84 318i (finished in August 1992) that did 13.9s in the 1/4 mile and blasted many-a-2.5L E30 M3 at trackdays So how did you manage that? Stopwatch timing gear? :) 14.8 was my best with a NV 2.5, 2.8's aren't 13.9 fast! Haha, no not a stopwatch. ; ) Tha...

Re: m50 into a 318is

On the swaps my father has done since August, 1992, we've used standard E30 325i Getrag 260's with anywhere from 3,46 to 4,45 rearends [typ 188], depending on the engine and vehicle setup. This includes M50's from 2,5 to 3,2 displacement, some with compressors. The 260 trans is stout, and can take a...

Re: flywheel

A 325i flywheel is about 19 pounds stock (atleast in the U.S.) and can have material removed to get it to about 13 pounds safely. This is probably the most cost-effective route for getting a lightweight flywheel. You'll also need a 325i 228mm clutch kit and an M20 starter pinion (or a whole M20 star...

Re: Track day pics

T1 at brands must be a blast with entry and exit speeds being so high, along with the varied cambers. Toca 2 and 3 on Playstation are the closest I've gotten to running that track. :( At trackdays, do you guys run the short-course or full F1 circuit? Also, do you have a dyno plot of your M42? Stu

My 318is has 330,000 miles on the chassis. It has a 3.0L M50 with about 80k miles now. Had the M42 until about 250,000 until it was removed to drop in the 6. Re:

Why an M30 conversion? I don't know the race classes available to E30's in your country, but an M30 swapped E30 would be highly uncompetitive in most U.S. classes. If you want to build a dedicated racer for a certain class, it would seem to me that a 3.2 S50 would be best. What about a 3.0 US S50 (s...

It's a US spec S52, converted to OBD-1, and some sort of aftermarket supercharger setup. I don't know the details of Randy's old motor but that is the basics of it.

With the 24v, I've only taken 5th all the way on one occasion. Pulled to 6800 and couldn't get it any further...but ~158mph (5th, 3.73)
