Re: M40 Cams
Haha cool  How'd I miss that? Cheers As the Wiki states, a worn camshaft will stop the engine revving above about 5,000 RPM....bad hydrolic lifters will cause a "tapperty" sounding engine but will rev OK. Be careful when lifting up the camshaft as there are small "washer" things on top of the...

Re: Blower Motor Resistor Pack....where is it?
OK I gave up trying to find this resistor pack....as the WIKI states...."the pack is in a different position depending on if the car has air-con or not. If it does not have air-con it is located on the left side where the glove box is"...it does NOT state where the pack is on a E30 RHD with air-con ...

Re: Blower Motor Resistor Pack....where is it?
Thanks for the advice Grrrmachine....the Wiki is a bit confusing in stating that aircon E30s have the relay in a different place to non-aircon cars. I see now that the resistor pack is located right near the blower so I should find it easily. @KW355....yes I had the same thought that it could be the...

Blower Motor Resistor Pack....where is it?
Have not been here for I while but I am still an E30 owner! OK my blower motor only works on position 4 so it probably is the Resistor Pack that has failed...I will test it first before replacing it. The trouble is that the WIKI tells you that the Resistor Pack is located under the glovebox in a non...

Re: I.C.V.
Yes definitely adjusting the factory-set idle stop is only overiding the problem and could give you starting issues. The throttle body has to be virtually fully shut I believe....I may be wrong.... at which point the Throttle Position Switch (TPS) under the throttle body should "click" when the thro...

Re: m40 camshaft replacement
The engine coolant drainage plug on my M40 is a blue plastic plug on the bottom of the radiator...use a large screwdriver or a large coin to loosen it and the coolant drains out...you can put a hosepipe over the nipple there to direct the water flow. You will need to burp air bubbles out of the syst...

Have you checked the Blue sensor seeing as it has a problem mainly when cold? Likewise check the TPS is working properly.....check these items at the ECU connector. Also could be a bad CPS. Check for air leaks all around the intake area and I would suggest that copper NGK plugs are used and OEM plug...

It is very easy to lock the flywheel....there is a hole in the bell housing just next to the starter motor. Best is to disconnect the battery, remove spark plugs and turn the engine over by means of a 22 mm socket on the end of the crankshaft. While doing this press the tool or bolt through the bel...

The flywheel locking tool you can use the BMW rod that comes in the boot toolkit that is used in conjunction with the spark-plug spanner.....or any 8 mm bolt I think. As stated the Haynes manual will tell you how to time and tenstion the cambelt. If you are replacing the camshaft with the head still on the engine....a word of warning. The engine slopes to the right side and if you look on that side below the cam you will notice that on the downhill side are about...

Should not matter that the insulating sheath is tattered as it is a ground wire only.
The main thing is to check that both end lugs are crimped tightly and the contact surfaces are clean and the bolts are tight.

Guibo or centre bearing maybe.....need to look at both at the same time!
Noises at all speeds is often the lower bolt on the rear shocks or the top mountings as stated.....doubt this is the case here.

My 1991 M40 318i pulls off very well and flies through all the gears in no time.
Is the engine revving up to 5,500 RPM easily? If not then you probably have a worn camshaft and changing the diff or flywheel will not help much!

It means 0.35 of an Amp ie. 350ma which is not acceptable. Your meter would be more accurate if it has a lower range you can use ie. 1.0 amp.

Re: Lackluster brakes
My 1990 318i saloon stops pretty well with standard disks up front and drums at the rear. You need a good quality set of disk pads up front and check that the rear drums are adjusted properly and that the linings are not glazed...the drums do not do too much of the braking anyhow. Test that the Serv...

Re: coolant heater valve
The valve for the heater coolant has a diaphram built in that tends to tear with age and lets water leak out through the coil body....this is if it is not leaking at the O rings. Generally unfixable....you need to get a new one as one from a breaker yard is probably also old and perished. Is yours n...

Re: M40 not Cranking.
The cable you marked as "negative braided cable" is actually the input to the starter motor itself; the other side of the starter motor goes to ground on the motor body itself. This "braided" wire should be insulated from the starter motor body....your picture looks like the insulation is a bit ragg...

Re: M40 not Cranking.
You can short out the two large lugs....one has the braided wire that goes direct into the starter motor and the other goes direct to the battery/alternator. This should spin the starter motor like crazy but will not engage the flywheel. Then short the small lug that should have a Black/Yellow wire ...

If the cam lobes and rocker followers do not look worn then the noise is from the hydrolic tappets. Sometimes a good oil change will cure the noisy tappets but otherwise they need to be replaced. Re: Fuse 21 melted, now car won't start
You may have more than one problem here ie. something else is wrong other than a blown fuse 21. If your vehicle has the battery in the trunk then the one black wire that goes up front to the battery junction block has a "fusable link" in it which may have blown at the same time as fuse 21 blew. This...

Air bubbles in the system usually means a leaking hose...the return hose to the reservoir can pick up pin pricks which let air in.
