Thanks guys. I'd pretty much come to the same conclusion by going over the diagrams again. I think I've worked it out... The bit which looks like it'd prevent starting is on the starting circuit. Its called the starter immobilisation relay (k1w). It bridges the gap between the ignition and starter and only starts if the transmission range switch is in the right place. A yellow/black 2.5 w...
