Re: Temp gauge not working - not cluster - earth point?
Had a similar problem, changed the temperature sender, now it works fine. It's the brown one if I remember correctly, I know the blue one is for the ECU.

Re: Leaking Shock Absorber
No damage since I've owned the car. Can it not be attributed to worn top shock mounts or other worn suspension bushings?

Re: Leaking Shock Absorber
Yes, it is the correct one. It's exactly the same as the one on the right side. Car is a 318i, standard suspension setup, with 195/50 15 inches. Other than that, all is standard...cliffybabe wrote:is it the right shock for ur car??

Leaking Shock Absorber
I noticed about 6 months ago that my rear left shock absorber was leaking, so I decided to replace it. Once it was in, all was well. I noticed again at the weekend while I was doing some work on the brakes, that this shock absorber is now leaking as well. What causes shock absorbers to leak?

Yep! Got it sorted. Changed the brown temp sensor, all works fine now. Just a bit of a bugger to get in there to change it. Also changed thermostat, cause previous one had been bodged. Temp readings are fine now...

My M40 idles at around 750 - 800rpm - but never "pulsates". Rpms jump between 750 and 800 rpms but have never pulsated as bad as yours Smithy!

Not starting when hot...
I have posted about this topic before, but I have observed more since then. Car starts perfectly when cold. Sometimes you have to wiggle the key to start it. Problem is when the engine is hot, or if the car has been standing in the sun: car will not start. Turn the key to ignition position, everythi...

I have a similar problem on my 318i, makes a metallic clunking sound when riding on uneven road surfaces...don't know if this is related in anyway to the above problem?

Throttle Body Heater Plate
I live in sunny South Africa, so would like to join the two rubber water hoses together with a piece of piping. What piping would be good to use, and what diameter pipe should i use? By the way, the engine is a 318i M40. Any suggestions ?

Re: Noisey power steering on 318i 1990
I have had the same problem on my 1990 318i. I have tensioned the belt, and flushed the PAS fluid and put new fluid in, and it makes almost like a moaning / groaning noise when turning at low speed and idle. The noise can sometimes be heard when driving...

I had this problem after my rocker cover gasket was replaced. The problem was that the nuts that hold the cover down weren't tightened properly, and oil slowly was seeping down the side of the head onto the exhaust manifold gasket. Tightened the nuts, worked a treat!

Yup! I have the same problem....don't know what causes it, but I have only noticed my car does it in traffic after a while. It seems to be the longer you move slowly the worse the jumping becomes. Symptoms are almost the same as funky-monkey's, only in 1st when pulling off slowly...and guess what en...

I have done a bit more listening, and have noticed the same vibration happens if you take your foot off the throttle while driving. When you hear the droning sound, you can feel vibration through the seats of the car. Any more ideas?

Re: Annoying Vibration
Thanks for the advice guys! My first guess was the diff and/or prop centre bearing. Could low oil in the diff/gearbox cause a vibration? I have had a battle and still haven't managed to drain the diff and change the oil. Secondly, I don't know if it's a gearbox or diif sound, but it whines, varies w...

It seems to be coming from the rear of the car, it's almost like a droning sound. It happens when freewheeling in neutral and with the clutch in.

Annoying Vibration
I have noticed an annoying vibration that happens when my car is free-wheeling, and the vibration varies with speed. Once you let the clutch out, and the wheels are being driven again, the vibration ceases. Any ideas?

My drivers window winds down about an inch and a half, and then the winder gets very hard to turn. If you carry on winding it, it makes a loud click-click sound. I have on one occasion managed to get it wound down after we had had quite a bit of rain, but other than that, I'm pretty clueless. Any he...

Does anyone know if there is a "generic" fan one can replace the aux fan with, as they are rather expensive! Also, if alternative fans are available, can one just mod a standard electric fan to fit; and will it work with the two speed temperature switch, ie: run at two different speeds?

I was replacing the non-existant thermostat on my M40 lump this afternoon, and as I was tightening one of the thermostat housing bolts, I just suddenly got that awful feeling when a bolt on your cylinder head gets stripped of its thread. The other 2 bolts are fine, it's just the top one thats stripp...
