I've used the Draper one for the last five years with no problems at all.

Saves faffing about with bits of wire & trying to remember how long to hold them there for.

Sooty why don't you use a secondhand M3 system of some kind? the bore is 50 odd mm so in the right ball park. You've got to use the starter that came with the flywheel. i.e. M20 flywheel = M20 starter. Had a similar problem with mine recently.
Checked the usual things out....ICV, MAF, throttle linkage, etc.

Eventually found that the mat on the driver's side was resting on the gas pedal & stopping it coming all the way back.
