Re: Tappety M20B25
The tappet noise can be louder in the cabin than from outside on these.
It sounds wierd but the sound seems to travel up the steering column, if you put some bluetac over the steering wheel bolt at the end of the column it sounds much nicer from the drivers seat.

Re: Coilover weight saving
Ive seen some kw variant 1 or 2 and some bc racing coilovers that are under budget. I know alot of jap boys use them and would reccommend them, has anyone had any experience with bc?
My choice is probably between the kw variant 2's and the bc's.

Re: X-pipe +/- & position
I cant find any good pictures of what i mean online so ill do my best to explain. The x pipe works in conjunction with header length and collector design to take advantage of exhaust pressure waves to 'pull' exhaust gas out of the cylinder. The combined effect also sucks in intake charge mixture dur...

Re: Coilover weight saving
Why would you presume i would buy cheap ones? I understand they will cost more than a shock and spring setup but im happy to pay the extra if they perform better.
Has anyone had any experience of a good set of coilovers on the road? And would they reccomend them?

Re: Coilover weight saving
If you were to go for a budget spec coil over kit then they're normaly a damper and bolt on adjustable spring platform type system which will weigh a similar amount to the standard system. The point of proper coil overs is the ability to choose the spring stiffness, balance of the car, weight distr...

Re: Coilover weight saving
Don't take this the wrong way but I think if you're choosing them for weight saving you're looking at them for the wrong thing and maybe are a tad confused? What is it you're doing with the car? Thats ok, i can see why you would say that. Im not choosing them for a weight saving, that was just one ...

Wasnt expecting that! The look so much lighter in pictures, guess there is no point in choosing coilovers then.DanThe wrote:The gaz built front struts ive handled before were at least 50% heavier than a standard fully built front strut!

Hi, does anyone know how much weight is saved by choosing coilovers over a strut and shock setup?
Im looking to buy a gaz kit if it makes any difference.
thanks

Re: getrag 240 m20 gearbox oil
I dont have a problem with my gearbox, it works fine. Just wanted to know the best oil to use in it. Had someone come to me once, saying that they'd changed the oil in their gearbox and now it wouldn't engage first gear properly. I asked them to examine the old oil, if they still had it, and sure e...

Re: getrag 240 m20 gearbox oil
Brianmoore, just posted this two threads down: Sounds like both the gearbox oil and the hydraulics to me. If it's still difficult to get into first after the hydraulics are sorted, then the recognised cure is to use ATF Dextron II in the gearbox, instead of SAE80; the same as used in the E34/36 gea...

getrag 240 m20 gearbox oil
I am going to be changing the gearbox oil on my 91 320i and im trying to figure out which gearbox oil is best.
Ive read on some american forums but they are conflicting between different grades on mtf and even atf in a manual box.
What does everyone use over here for the getrag 240?
Thanks

Re: M20 Inlet & Cam Cover refurb options ?
I used sand paper to get rid off the wax then stuck the parts in the dishwasher to clean them up, works perfectly and is nice and cheap

Then paint with a rattle can, cost around £8 to do both the inlet and rocker cover.

Shame about the pattern parts!
Does anyone know how the inners are attatched? Spot welded/seam welded etc?
thanks

The idea is to remove any stress raisers on the rocker. I can do it for free so i might aswell give it a go. I know i cannot change the physical properties the cast. My bmw one that snapped had plenty of air bubbles in it, i was quite shocked.
