It could be any one of a number of things. As Morat suggests it could be an air leak from a hose, it could also be down to fuelling... perhaps blue temperature sensor, or even the throttle position sensor could be playing up a bit (they get gunked up with oil) These are simple to check and remedy. ...

You might have a high comp engine if its an '88 - possibly 174 bhp :?: Change the ecu to motronic 1.3 and chip it! Cheap & easy mod. But dont you need to change the whole loom first.
