I have a similar issue with the speedo. Its usually the connection at the differential at the back of the car. IT gets wet and covered in mud etc, so over the years they rust.

You'll also need to make sure the ABS light doesn't come on at all in order to get an MoT.

Yep I'd second that. Paint diff, paint rear beam, new subframe bushes and wishbone bushes, new flexi and rigid brake pipes - new rear wheel bearings if you can be bothered. Good opportunity to get up under the back of the car with a bit of stonechip too.
