I think the inlet manifolds are differant on an E36 but you will probably find it a lot cheaper to change the engine.When Russ had the timing chain on his iS jump a few teeth and bend the valves it cost Ãƒ”šÃ‚£1700 to mend

Check what thermostat you have . I put a new one in at the same time as I changed the timing chains,old one opened at 87c new one opened at 77c resulting in the needle now sitting between the blue and the quarter marks

It might be a leak on your exhaust manifold gasket/flange. Is it more of a ticking or clicking?

Don't think white spirit will do it .Proper thinners is nasty stuff and smells like pear drops. I think Hamerite do it or see if you can beg some from a bodyshop or garage
