Re: M42 chip recommendation

Thanks for the comments. An interesting tangent to the original question but all good:) I dont think I want to be the first to test out Turbonoz. I have had everything serviced that I can think of servicing including the fuel injectors. I will visit the dyno once I get to the end of my maintenance l...

M42 chip recommendation

Hi. Does anyone have any recommendations on a chip supplier for an m42b18? Unfortunately Speedtouch is not able to supply me a chip as he does not stock my particulare DME number. There are few out there for my ECU number but not many actually quote which DME they are for. I have found one a Turbono...

Re: Ignition Barrel / shaft problem 1990 318is

Thanks Satan, I had a good look at the connection the end of the barrel fits in and I shoved a bit of tape in there to see it a firmer connection with the barrel would help. Miraculously it did. It now starts perfect every time thanks to a 1cm square bit of tape. :D :D :D :D Thanks for your help.

Ignition Barrel / shaft problem 1990 318is

Hi, hoping someone can assist with some advice on which part needs changing/ adjusting. When I turn the key to start I get dash lights and the starter moves to the start position but the starter does not engage. I wiggle the key and push it up and in and around and it then engages the starter interm...

Advice on tyres and ride height

Hi, here is a pic of my car with stock height, 14”a basket weaves and 195/65R14 tyres. I need new tyres and front suspension so what do you think I should do in terms of: 1) would love to have 15”a basket weaves but they seem to cost a lot and be very rare in Australia. Any suggestions on a better l...

Hi I have come across a 1980 635csi for sale. Its not cheap but it has had a lot of work done so its in great condition. I currently have an original condition 1989 320i which has had very little work done, is all original and in great condition. I am thinking of either selling the 320i and buying t...

Re: engine knock / tap at low revs advice sought

Good news, there is not broken rocker arm. Bad news, there is a broken exhaust manifold stud. Even better news I managed to slip on a nut over the 1mm of thread that was protruding and tighten it nicely. Very quickly followed by more bad news as I tried to make sure the bolt next to it was tight and...

engine knock / tap at low revs advice sought

My 1989 320i has developed an engine knocking/ tapping noise. The noise occurs at about 1000rpm under light and hard acceleration. it does not happen at idle for anywhere above 1100rpm regardless of how hard I accelerate. The noise seems to be coming from the front of the engine near either the firs...

I need to get my front suspension done on my 320i. I want to get it lower than stock but not too low. Nothing fancy. I don't want to buy and fit myself I just want to take it to somewhere like Pedders, Midas etc and pay for it to be done. I am on the Central Coast just north of Sydney, anbody got an...

Re: E30 engine cutting out - any advice?

I had a similare problem which turned out to be the main power relay/fuse. (One of the large fuses in the little fuse box with three fuses in it, just in front of the big fuse box in the engine bay, unsure if that is the same one that Brian is talking about). The diagnosis was to turn the engine on ...

I just want to leave some positive feadback for Speadtouch. He gives excellent service. I bought the mild chip for my 320i and it makes a huge difference to the smoothness of the engine and improves the low rpm torque issue that the 320i has.

So many of these comments make me appreciate how good the e30 is. "Up to 1l/1000miles is acceptable (to BMW). Sorry for late response. I would describe my problem as being the same as yours, but there are probably a number of potential causes such as the blue temp sensor, vacuume leaks, tps. Re: Auto v's manual transmission loss

The lock up torque converter kicks in in 4th gear at about 83km/hr. Using my "arse dyno" I'd say there is a slightly noticeable difference in hp when the converter is locked and unlocked.

Any opinions out there on whether the locked up converter gives similar losses to a manual?

Auto v's manual transmission loss

I just read a few old posts about estimating transmission losses on a car and oh boy I don't want to open that debate up again.

One question though, does anyone have any data on the relative transmission loss between and auto and a manual e30?

My guess would be 5hp but thats just a guess.
