Its very possible BMW specified custom droop and travel values for their B6 damper fitted to early sports and some other models with 51mm and smaller struts (lets not even discuss valving). I have two B8's at home, one set is short, the other is not. One pair are from BMW MS and other from Bilstein...

I guess my issue is that I have 'some' lowering springs on my car now (have no idea what they are or how much its lowered, see pic below) The shocks on the car are pretty much dead and i want a good ride but i want it to be sporty. B4 is pretty much a standard damper B6 has the shortest damper rod and was standard issue on Mtech 1 sports, very good damper B8 is more heavy duty, fitted to Alpina and Hartge cars but longer stroke/taller damper rod so you cant fit as short a spring that you would be able to with B6 dampers Sorry...
