Re: Removing Diff.
Hello, I used an allen key with a big long bar to release the prop-shaft. For the bolts onto the subframe @ bush, I jammed one spanner in on one side of the bolt, and the other side I used a spanner, again extended to the max with a bar! For the other bolts I used a socket - and guess what - an exte...

Haha I like your reasoning kimh!
If you change your stat your car will get to optimum temp quicker and will be more fuel efficient. Cooler engines burn more fuel. Stat is easy to change too

Re: Engine temperature query
thanks for the reply eltel. thermostat was replaced about 8 months ago, but it could be that again. I'll put the kettle on tomorrow and test it. i can't see how additional coolant has much to do with it, the water never boils as it's under pressure, and I can't imagine the BP changing much between t...

Engine temperature query
The temp gauge never goes above 1/4 mark these days, it used to sit perfectly in the middle. What's wrong? :?: I did some research on the zone and carried out a couple of tests: Car idled for 20mins, interior heater off. Measured resistance of water sensors (on the sensors themselves, not at the clu...

Re: Alternator overcharging question (cheeky E46 question)
the alternator is overcharging at something like 17v (above 2.5k rpm).
I just didn't have this problem before I parked the car up I'm just thinking i might have killed it by putting the bigger capacity battery in - doesn't make any sense in my head how though.

Alternator overcharging question (cheeky E46 question)
Need some advice please! Went back to my "winter car" this weekend, which had been parked up for a few months. Have been turning the engine over every few weeks to keep things running but this weekend the battery was dead. I just bought a new battery after thinking it was 8 yrs old and knackered aft...

Re: Oil warning light - oil at halfway level
The light has gone away all by itself (car parked on level ground) - so either this is prelim-warning - or as suggested the sensor needs cleaning! I'll top-up and if the light comes back i'll do the petrol-clean method
thanks all!

Exhausts and manifold
My back-box is shot, and i think my manifold is blowing too, so looking at a complete new exhaust for my cab 325i. I think it's a 2-piece at the moment too. Not looking for too loud (lot of motorway cruising) but I have loved the deep growl sound of the stainless back-box. Thinking of stainless thro...

Oil warning light - oil at halfway level
Does anyone else get this - the oil level is at halfway on the dipstick but the light has come on the check panel. Is this common at halfway (sensitive sensor) or potentially a pressure issue?
FWIW 325i, 1990, oil service about 2k ago (may not have been exactly topped-up, oil burn isn't an issue).

Some c**t just hit my car - how much to get fixed?
Anyone know how much will it cost to replace a front drivers' wing on my poor little diamond black 325i cabriolet? A SKODA, yes, a frigging SKODA decides to do a u-turn without checking i was coming. Good job my brakes aren't bad - just managed to slow down and swerve enough so he clipped my wing on...

Re: Rear wheel bearings
this can be a pig of a job, i've broken a hub puller trying to get one out. had to remove the trailing arm, and use a 32mm socket (i think) and a very big f'ing hammer to remove the old one - corrosion and heat = it was welded on! if you're lucky getting the old one out, the new one goes in using th...

Hi, when i swapped my head out, i had a similar problem. All were sorted with a valve adjustment, nice tight .25mm. It was night and day with the power difference and smooth idle. This may not be the problem as you said your head was fine 2 years ago and has been sat there, but it'll only take 30min...

if they have both died, this is unlikely, but FYI if you have no joy with the a frames (the metal bits either side of the windscreen): as well as the external terminals, the switch contacts inside can go green and bad. it's a little delicate/fiddly, but you can also open up the switch - watch out i ...

Strange, the diameter of the shifter neck should be the same, so if yours was oem to start with sounds weird. Did you try some wd40/grease to help ease it on? I did mine a few weeks ago and it was a bit stiff, but not impossible.

i thought they were just coloured to look cool? nah, i "think" they're stronger and not prone to perishing like the standard rubbers so are uber reliable. you don't want a split hose when caning your car for hours on end. i've nver used them myself, i think e30 kits of 4or5 hoses costs about £...

Re: Overheating
Pointing at your viscous as the culprit. If your rad was blocked, it wouldn't release heat from your engine whilst driving, but at that mileage a new rad is a good idea aswell. You might as well change all your hoses - if you haven't put some fancy silicone ones already for the track :) with the new...

this might sound stupid, but did you tighten the carrier nuts up? just asking cos it shouldn't move fwd/back? or do you mean just the bearing itself moves? cos a little movement is normal, but I'm talking a small amount?

Re: Overheating
does your car overheat when the car is driven at a steady speed? your viscous fan kicks-in when it gets hot. this sucks air over the rad when the car is stationary. this is a very common failure, most common symptom being car overheating when still but fine on the move. there's a famous newspaper te...
