Re: MPG ... 318i

Yep, that's really bad. If it is over-fuelling that bad you should smell it or feel some seriously lumpy driveability. Also it'll be contaminating your oil something chronic. What does the swing-o-meter show when you're driving? Mine pretty much consistently shows around 30mpg unless I'm doing hard ...

Re: E30s.... better than modern cars? (except newer BMWs?)

I believe the point NayC was trying to make was about the subjective whole experience being better than a modern car, and to that point I agree with him. My point is that the capacity, balance and quality of the E30 is impressive even against modern D-segment cars. Yes, it is a sweeping generalisati...

Re: E36 318is, thoughts?

I had a '98 318iS. One of the final run-out models so it was a 4-door with all the toys. Looked great - mine was Montreal Blue. http://i727.photobucket.com/albums/ww278/JSAMacLean/DSC00021.jpg Nice cruising car, ate up the miles (I have a 100mi round-trip commute to work each day). But still had eno...

Re: E30s.... better than modern cars? (except newer BMWs?)

Sorry, as an aside to that, has anyone heard of modern engine conversions into an E30? My top choices would be : Mini Cooper S Mk2 1.6L Turbo (same engine as Peugeot 207 GT and GTi) Audi TT 1.8T Golf 2.0T GTi Volvo/Focus ST T5 2.5 5-cyl turbo E90 320d E90 335i With the exception of the last two, the...

Re: E30s.... better than modern cars? (except newer BMWs?)

The Mk2 Cooper S turbo engine is hands-down one of the best engines < 2L on sale today. Possibly ever. Such a great midrange, smooth and flexible. The handling is excellent on smooth surfaces and on the smaller wheels - really quick rack, some good feedback for a modern car, decent steering efforts....

Re: E30s.... better than modern cars? (except newer BMWs?)

My old Mk1 MX5 'felt' better than my E30. I agree with the sentiment that a lot of modern cars are overweight, dull and devoid of much feel, but there are plenty out there that still have the magic. Really? My wife's got a Mk2.5 MX-5. It has a much faster steering rack than the E30 (faster than the...

Re: E30s.... better than modern cars? (except newer BMWs?)

I work for a major carmaker (not BMW) and as part of my job drive many competitor's cars. Everything from the Hyundai Getz to Bentley Continental GT. I've had an E36 318iS and 2 E30 318i (one of which I still own). And it is quite telling that when I'm explaining what makes a good car at work I have...

Re: Had the heating on today

To be fair it was roasting today. I've got an external/internal digital temp readout in my car, and when I got in at 5pm it said 50degC! My E30 has other issues, but the temperature has always been solid as a rock just below 1/2, and while sitting on the massive M1 J14-J18 queues this afternoon it s...

Re: magpie

Thanks for the AFM. Really decent price, quick postage, and even resent another one when the first one wasn't quite right. Top quality!

M40 Engine Problems Fixed

Hi, Just thought I'd post the results of my search to fix some engine problems. Might help someone else if they have similar. At the end of January I bought a 1990 318i 4-door. Low miles (79k) and the current owner had bought it off the original owner 12 months ago. Looked clean (especially inside) ...
