Ok thanks guys, I'll make a start stripping off the head at the weekend, and will get the flatness checked before I take it for a skim. Will most likely take me a good while as I've never done anything so involved on my car but it should be a good learning experience!
Cheers,
jek

M42 head gasket repair - will the head take a second skim?
Hi guys, Whilst checking over my car last night, I noticed that the oil level has dropped a good 3/4inch on the dipstick over the last month and that the end of the dipstick had the dreaded milky sludge on it. The car hasn’t been overheating, but it has been steadily using a small amount of coolant ...

Re: Oil on my spark plugs
Warmed up the car and had a look for the source of the dripping coolant. It appears to be coming from underneath the throttle body. Could it be one of the hoses for the throttle body heater plate?

Gonna get a gasket ordered next week I think.
That coolant pipe at the back of the head sure is hard to see/get to!

Oil on my spark plugs
Was going to change my spark plugs last night, however, when I removed the cover and coil plugs, I found that the 'spark plug well' in cylinders 1 and 3 had about half an inch of engine oil in it. Any ideas what could be causing this? I'm hoping its something simple like the rocker cover gasket? The...

Re: Advice needed on a couple of rust repairs
Fantastic, thanks for the photos, MrWhite! I'm following your method - got most of the rust cut out this evening, hopefully start welding in patches tomorrow. Seam sealer and that rubbery stone chip stuff on the sills really stinks when you take it off with a flap disc! My car is going to end up asy...

Re: Advice needed on a couple of rust repairs
I think I'll probably attempt something similar, MrWhite. There's only one scrap yard near me and they don't have any E30s in so I've got little chance of finding a donor jacking point anyway. Some photos would be fantastic, cheers!

Re: Advice needed on a couple of rust repairs
Managed to get round to repairing a rusty section on my scuttle panel. I thought this was just a tiny blister on the paint until I put my finger right through it - it must have rusted from the inside out. http://lh6.ggpht.com/_5NP3UYh6KBE/Sar766YIOeI/AAAAAAAAAHk/NbezWkV3Hkw/s400/IMGP1630.JPG Here's ...

Re: Advice needed on a couple of rust repairs
Cheers Harry,
I was aware about the square section often being mistaken for a jacking point - sounds like a good idea to just to cut it out and replace with flat sheet. Much easier to make, too!
Any ideas for the real jacking point (i think!?) shown in my second picture?
Jek

Advice needed on a couple of rust repairs
I've decided to try and tackle a few rust spots on my car, and have been having a good poke around underneath. The shell seems to be in ok condition overall, (I hope!), but I've got outbreaks of rust at both the front and rear jacking points, and on the sill at the bottom of the A-pillar, which expl...

Idiotic jump starting error
Hi No excuses really (ok, maybe one - it was dark!), but I made the incredibly stupid mistake of connecting the jump leads in reverse polarity while 'helping' a friend jump his car. Am I likely to have damaged anything while doing so? Car starts and runs ok, I've yet to check all the fuses but will ...

Yep, its pretty thin there! Only been welding for a few weeks, so might well end up making a few holes of my own! Going to practice some thin stuff on an old bonnet first I think!n1tr0_9 wrote:Shouldnt be a problem. You can put much heat in anywaya s you'll just blow holes! Good luck

Scuttle panel repair - can I weld here?
Hi all, Finally getting round to doing some small rust repairs on my car. I found what appeared to be a penny sized hole on my scuttle panel, but by the time I'd cut out all the rot, said hole was considerably larger! Problem is, the hole is now quite close to the windscreen. I was hoping I might ju...

Ah, pretty sure we're talking about the same car, i didn't clock the reg but noticed that a centre cap was missing last time i saw it!
I noticed from the Scottish Zoners thread that you have an Is too MrWhite, 3 all so close by! Good to have so many e30s in the neighbourhood!

Re: Anyone on here own a 318is with a sport kit?
I've recently noticed a lazur blue is with an M-tech kit which is often parked round the corner from where I stay in the west end area of Glasgow. I had a good look at it last time I passed and it seems quite tidy - a lot better than my scruffy car! Wonder if its owned by a zoner?

Got the cap off eventually (took quite some force to remove!) and popped in a new tensioner. My engine's still a bit noisy between 3.5k and 4.5k rpm when warm though, so i'm guessing the sprockets and chain could be to blame!

M42 chain tensioner bolt stuck
I'm having some difficulty removing the timing chain tensioner cap on my M42, the bolt seems to be stuck solid! I left it to soak in WD40 overnight but I still couldn't shift it this morning, and am getting a bit worried about ending up with a rounded bolt. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I co...
