Timing/head gasket stuff

Hi. 1989 325 touring that needs:-

timing belt kit
water pump
head bolt set
head gasket set

If you could price the items separately that'd be great.

Thanks for the tip Brian. The sunroof hasn't worked in years I've just never been bothered enough to fix it until now. I'm guessing the worst case scenario would be the cable system failure? Does it come in the form of a self contained cassette that can be swapped out relatively easily, or is it a n...

Re: Sunroof woes

I know squat about electrics, car or otherwise, so it's about time I learned. I've bought a multimeter, now I have to figure out how to use it. The roof panel is slightly raised at one corner and operating the open/close switch does nothing at all. No sounds no movement.

Sunroof woes

Short version.....mine doesn't work. I'm assuming this must mean a failure in a motor/fuse/relay/wiring or the cabling system. Is the mechanism in a self contained "cassette" type? Hopefully this would let me swap it out for a working unit if that is where the problem lies. Any tips on testing/diagn...

Re: A couple of braking questions

Brake servo is generally go/no go, but the master cylinder attached to it isn't. That can leak internally or through the end seals, affecting brake balance or letting air enter the system, giving a long, soft pedal. Upgrades/mods to the servo or M/C won't improve the brakes as such - they will just...

Re: A couple of braking questions

The standard brakes on a 325i are more than adequate for normal driving. Why do you think there is something wrong? Ben I don't necessarily think something is wrong, but as my car is 27 years old (and I didn't drive one when they were new) I can't be sure they're performing as they should. I'd imag...

With regard to my 325 touring can anyone tell me A) does servo performance degrade over time or is it just a case of it works or it doesn't? If it does degrade whats involved refreshing it? And B) is the standard brakung system any good? I'm not a performance junky with this car and I'm thinking abo...

Re: What to do?

Exhaust valve guides are the bit that wears on the top end. On a 'normal' M20B25 at 160k, I'd expect everything else, after a bit of valve refacing and seating, to be within original factory tolerances. Knowing you're the zones version of macgyver, I realise you may not be able to answer this but c...

Re: What to do?

If the bottom end is good could you get away with a just reconditioned head? New injectors and new breather hoses and you should have an engine that will do another 100,000 miles. The car doesn't get used much and to the best of my knowledge it doesn't use/ burn/leak any fluids. If this is true the...

Re: What to do?

if you want to stick with the m20 then why not go for a 2.8?? like you say, it offers an "as new" m20 not a 100K+ M5x lump, just don't see thew appeal in the M5x swap as to me the engine is soulless, if done right for the same sort of outlay you get a "new" engine. thats the way i see it. I can handle the spanner work it's fabrication that I fail hard on. I'm surprised there isn't a Zoner offering a package tbh. Sump/mounts/wiring etc. £2k was more than I wanted to spend and I'd also need to bear in mind that sticking with the m20 would give me what is effectively a new engine wherea...

I'm at a bit of a crossroads regarding what to do with my 325. It has 160k miles on the clock, doesn't run very well and is noisy on the top end. I'm looking to transplant my e30 later this year to a more modern unit and something has been niggling at me. I see the M50/52 discussed constantly but haven't noticed the M54 swap coming up and I don't know why. Is it because it's an identical swap to the 50/52 or is it a lot more involved and/or n...

Hi James,
There isn't a part number as such on the part itself, well not of the format you quoted above. It's a genuine BMW part as it has the logo stamped on it and the only number I can see is 1708800.

Price needed for rubber boot/pipe

I think the part is 13711708800. Large diameter hose/pipe between the air meter and throttle assembly.
Haven't got the exact vehicle details to hand but it's an "F" plate 325i touring.

TIA.

Is that actually legal here?.....aren't you effectively towing your fuel tank behind you?

As for the blow back flap, there seems to be a catflap "box saver" type and a m/f band type. Which is most suitable (and where the hell do you mount it? lol).
