M42 Valve Cover Breather Bolts
Hi I hope someone can help!! After recently having my M42 valve cover blasted and powder coated I am reassembling my engine and was putting back the plastic breather panel on the inside with the brass bolts. It would seem that the blasting has damaged the small M4 threads in the valve cover making t...

Hi Have 318is 1990 EE47994 Purchasing used current genuine BMW 450L Roof Box with E39 Estate roof bars. Do you have bars / base support system to fit E30? E30. Everything bar the head and block are E30 items from original engine. Just head, block and timing gear from E36.

318is M42 Engine wiring connections
Hi I have recently swapped the engine for another M42 and have just put all the wiring loom back on. Stupidly I should have labelled the connectors but everything seems to be ok bar one problem: The oil light never lights up, not on ignition. I had three connectors at oil pressure switch end. Two wi...

Re: Rusty valves
Hi Brianmoooore, thanks.
Presumably that was big end bearings or something then? No reason to think they are damaged. Mileage only 75k as far as I'm aware.
Used E30 manifolds etc so think all is ok. Will check for air leaks though, cheers.

Hi I am just completed an engine swap for my 318is after timing chain damage. I have used low mileage M42 from E36 and swapped all necessary ancillaries, basically just kept head, block and timing gear. Engine started no problem but will not idle properly, really hunts and runs rough up to 2000 rpm ...

318is Gearbox Oil Seal / Diff Pinion Oil Seal
Hi I'm changing the two rear gearbox oil seals and the diff pinion seal this weekend. Got a couple of questions: Have heard that "self-locking nuts" connecting propshaft to flanges either end need to be renewed, ie cannot be reused, is this the case? Car has covered 150k, how likely that the gearbox...

Hi I have a 1990 318is and am driving to France (700 miles) on holiday in early June. I desperately want to take a couple of bikes but am worried about the effect on fuel economy and performance, particularly as fuel is so expensive now and I want to maintain a good 85 or 90 on the French autoroutes...

Fantastic
Could I order all the above parts apart from the Gearknob (bit of a luxury at the moment!) and the Master Cylinder Repair Kit.
Not sure how payment etc works. Please let me know.
Thanks

Got it started. Had to really put my foot down and eventually started. Ran like a pig for first few seconds ie about 300rpm and really lumpy. After few seconds gave it a rev and spin up the road and now fine. Also restarts without a hiccup. Now I come to think of it it has done this to some degree b...

Hi Last night I tried to start the car and turns over but does not fire at all. Spark plugs are wet with fuel but when I take a plug lead off and leave on top of valve cover I get no spark. Any ideas? Battery is strong. New Bosch one in Jan this year. Always starts first time hot or cold. Had been l...

Heater Valve / Matrix Replacement
Have intermittent heat from my heater. Literally blows hot one minute and cold the next but more often cold. Engine is running at correct temp. Matrix does not appear to be blocked but not sure. Electric Aerial Conversion
Some vandal recently snapped off my manual aerial (rear wing mounted) and I am considering an electric replacement.
I believe GSF do BERU ones for about Ԛ£25 but my question is:
Will my car already be wired for an electric aerial (1989 318i 2dr)?
If not, what wiring is neccessary?
Thanks

I have a 1989 318i with standard suspension. I am interested in improving the handling but don't really want to lower by as much as 40mm and I understand that just using 40mm lowering springs really messes up the ride. Ok thanks a lot. Will get onto it as soon as I find time to go and buy a new sensor.Brianmoooore wrote:No need to drain the coolant to change the blue sensor, although IIRC it's a bit akward to get at on the M40.
You will loose a bit of coolant changing it, so top up the header tank a bit before you start.
