Re: output shaft advice

If the wheels were on the floor or the handbrake was on and the halfshaft was moving then its buggered. The rubber is probably split and the outer CV's has run dry. Just replace the whole shaft for a good second hand one, only difference to look out for is the reluctor ring if you have anti lock bra...

Re: 325i half clutch vibrate tremor

Could possibly be too much play in the drive train. Jack one rear wheel up, engine off, put it in 1st gear, take handbrake off and see if you can rotate the wheel. If it moves back and fourth by more than about 10mm you have an old car ! Its either the diff with too much backlash (new crush collar, ...

Re: Evans Waterless coolant, food for thought

Will still take time for the coolant to heat up from cold though, and if it's flowing through the rad from the off, that's going to take longer. aye ? Bit of a contradiction. You sure ross ? Hot running temperature is largely defined by the rate at which heat is lost in the rad. To run coolant with...

Re: Evans Waterless coolant, food for thought

I don't see how it would take longer to reach temperature if the coolant runs that much hotter ? The pulley can't be reduced that much as it has to fit over the input flange on the pump. If you fitted that then you could possibly stick with original stat, changing too many variables in one go would ...

Re: Evans Waterless coolant, food for thought

The hope is to use the stuff and keep the car looking original but it sounds like it would require parts like a specific temp stat (yet to be discovered) and a smaller water pump pulley to up the speed of the impeller to compensate for the viscosity. The more I think about it, if the stuff is that s...

Re: Evans Waterless coolant, food for thought

Corrosion happens due to poor maintainence and not replacing coolant at regular intervals. Again, band aid fix using Evans. I have an electric fan as I have an e36 rad but not sure how the engine running hotter would not allow the viscous to heat up? It runs hotter due to simple physics. Evans can'...

Re: Evans Waterless coolant, food for thought

Most M20's with a blown head that I've seen have failed between cylinders 4-5 or 5-6 due to corrosion around the gasket. Combine that with the heat soak it endures at the rear once you shut the engine down and its a problem waiting to happen. If you can do away with the corrosive water in the system...

Re: Evans Waterless coolant, food for thought

Looking at the specific heat capacity (the amount of heat that can be effectively absorbed) of Evans, it's clear why. Evans ranges from 0.64 to .68. A 50/50 water/ethylene glycol has a specific capacity of 0.82, making Evans 20% to 28% less efficient at absorbing heat! Is that a problem? I'll leave...

Re: Suspension or Steering prob... ideas needed...

You should be able to see it from above, not sure about your manifold though. (crap pic but its the only one I have to hand) It should look something similar to this (very old rack) and you line it up with the centre line on the pinion housing (not in pic) http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/marti...

Re: Suspension or Steering prob... ideas needed...

Check the steering column where it enters the rack, just below the universal joint. On the splined input shaft you should have a plastic collar, on the edge of this there is a small indication arrow poking out that should line up with centre line of the steering rack. Use that to set the rack to its...

Cogs are about £120 each and the shims will need replacing to remove the backlash, long process of putting it all back together and levering the lay shaft rearwards and measuring the amount of movement. If its too much you have to take it all apart again and put in a bigger shim (thousands of an inc...

Re: Road traffic Collision with POLICE!

With only one looong skid mark you've lost traction on one side because you've braked while your tyre was on the white line so the car has taken longer to stop so you may be ok there. The bit I don't get is why the damage is on the left side of both cars ? How far over were you? Surely it would have...

Re: Electric hood annoyance

By adjusting the length of the pushrod that lifts the cover, all you'll do is move it further out of sync with the rest of the system. The only way to then get it back in sync is to adjust the microswitch, What you should have done in the first place. If you adjust the length of the push rod so that...

Re: 1.8 m40 camshaft/valves/shims inspection-what to look fo

Pretty sure its due to stiff tappets, opening up the holes in the spray bar will just reduce the back pressure in the oil system and cause bigger problems over time.

Anyway the whole threads about more power from an M40 so its all a waste of time
