Fix or frag?
I have a 318 Tourer with an MOT due soon. Had bit of a poke about underneath in preparation and found sizeable holes in both rear inner arches, some rust bubbles on the sills and rear chassis legs. There may be more but I got a bit fed up after that :) On top of that it'll need a new exhaust, fuel f...

Ok, I've had a crack at these again yesterday with some better spring compressors. Compressed them as much as I dared but was about 2 inches away from where I needed to be. I can fully extend the shock out but as I say it always springs back. If I could somehow lock the shock in the fully extended p...

If you have, methinks it's the wrong parts - it shouldn't be that hard.
I can pull the shock out a few inches but it just springs back to where I started from

Can't compress my front springs
I have a spare pair of front struts for the Touring which I have been rebuilding. I've fitted new shock inserts then was unable to compress the springs enough to fit it all back together. Took them down to a local garage for them to have a try but they couldn't compress the springs enough either. Th...

Can you make up a simple manifold that the original throttle body will fit to? I'm thinking an ally tube with the throttle body bolted to one end and 4 branches off it to the head. The ICV should be easy enough to plumb in, then all the original electronics should work. If the M40 is only a stop gap...

Do not remove the torx headed screw though! Eek! What if I was to loosen it off thinking it held the fuse box top on? The wipers didn't behave themselves today either, a sharp tap to the top of K10 got them working though. I got back with them stopped halfway across the screen so did some further q...

Getting at the fuse box to fix wipers?
Now the wet weather has arrived it seems that my wipers have decided its a good time to stop working most of the time. They will stop, randomly, and not start working again until I give relay K10 a wiggle. Sometimes they start working all by themselves. When they're broken I can hear K10 clicking wh...

Brake judder (guide pins?)
Had a bit of judder/vibration when braking which developed recently which I put down to warped discs. Put new discs and pads on it last weekend which has improved things but its not completely gone, now I'm wondering what else it could be. The guide pins on the caliper bracket have quite a bit of pl...

I managed without any specialised tools but made up a press to get the new ones in from some M12 threaded bar and various pieces of steel welded together. I've got some pics of it somewhere. You don't need a slide hammer but it would make getting the old bearings out easier. I used a big hammer and ...

Managed to pick up a first aid kit for the Touring (contents to be renewed!) and am working out how to mount it. I can see the recess on the left hand cubby box door where it sits nicely. Intermittant stuttering on M40
1990 318i, been running fine most of the time (touch wood) Occasionally, as happened today, it'll stutter at low engine speeds. The engine looses power, stutters, sometimes get a few pops from the exhaust. Throttle position doesn't seem to make any difference. Once engine speed gets above about 1500...

Running 14" bottle tops shod with 195/65 tyres, on full lock in either direction the tyre catches the inner arch. Specifically the plastic bit which seems to be part of the undertray that runs across the car in front of the engine. Also looks like the outer edge of the tyre may be catching the forwa...

Refitting rear end, torque settings?
Just putting the finishing touches on my rear end swap, but Haynes is slightly lacking on torque settings, namely on the diff to beam bolts, the beam bush bolts, diff bush bolt, and possibly the prop to diff nuts. Are there any torque settings published anywhere for these? I've tightened them up pre...

I have a rear trailing arm setup I'm refurbing to throw on the Touring. The new trailing arms have ABS, the car currently doesn't have ABS. The driveshafts I got with this are knackered, CV joints are a bit "clunky". I wanted to check I can fit the driveshafts that are on the car (non-ABS) to the AB...

Will be replacing the beam/trailing arms soon and want to put new handbrake conduits/sheaths on (flexible tube the cable runs in between backplate and body). The metal breather line is rusting away under the pass side floor. Can I bin this and leave the breather tank venting from the plastic line that runs across the top of the fuel tank? Re: 3.91 diff to 318i?
Road speed divided by tyre circumference gives tyre rotational speed at a given road speed. Then multiply up by diff ratio and gear ratio to give engine speed. The tricky bit is keeping the units consistant.

Re: 3.91 diff to 318i?
I've been pondering the same, I do a lot of motorway miles and having the engine revving away at 3000+ rpm seemed a little high. Almost like you could do with having another gear :) Done a few excel calcs on the ratios; with 14" wheels and 0.81 5th gear ratio (think thats right for the Getrag 240?) ...
