First start takes ages!
Just done a search but got about 4,500 "answers" so, The first start of the day in my 318i is pretty appalling, it takes at least 2 or 3 tries of about 20seconds to fire up. Once it's done it's first start it's fine, even if you switch it straight off before it's warmed up it will start first turn a...

Re: Rear beam bushes
Sweet, was just wondering about MoT 'cause if it was in the last 6 months or so I'd say that wouldn't be long enough for a rubber bush to deteriorate dangerously (unless it was soaked in oil or set on fire of course, but it doesn't look like it!)
Hope it turns out a goodun for you.

Cheers for replying. Yeah, I'm probably worrying about nothing, but will prob change gbox oil anyway, if it quiets things down it won't be nagging at me, and I guess I'll get the maximum life out of it that way. The car is so totally unabused I'm just waiting to find something major wrong with it, ...

What about braking, any vibration there? Just wondering if the discs might be warped. Also, how old are the tyres? If they've been on since before you had the car you don't know what sort of abuse they've had & if the casings are damaged.

If you've actually seperated the driver's door plug, rather than just doing the red/black wire chop behind the speaker then I'd bet real money (not that photocopied stuff I try to use at the shops!) that you'll be into replacing all the pins in that now they've been disturbed & no doubt disintegrate...

might just be a bad connection to the solenoid. You can operate the lock manually from inside the boot if you're running out of juice also.

TBH, if the deadlocks aren't on I'd use a bit of metal coathanger or welding rod pushed behind the door seal to hook the lock pin back up.
I'm guessing that you didn't comprehend this with 100% of your brain before shutting the door!

Is the water pump working OK? Try removing the pressure cap (carefully) & see if there's any water being thrown out of the return in the top of the rad with the engine running. I've always noticed that with the viscous fan on every BMW I've owned but none have ever overheated even if it did seem str...

Re: M30 idleing
Doesn't sound like a problem at all, just the way the ICV/motion sensors hold the idle up whilst moving (something to do with emissions I believe).
Saying that, there could be an issue but without seeing/hearing it I'd be tempted to say just leave it be.

I'd guess that as it has a spark that it is turning over.
If you remove the timing cover & turn it over you'll be able to see if the cam turns with the engine or not.

I would take it to a reputable AC specialist for them to check, I'd imagine that if bearings etc were shot (lose? :P sorry) then it would send the compressor U/S but maybe re-sealing a second hand one from a scrapper would be a cheaper option than new? Gearbox mounts would be my favourite for this. Once built a banger Granada and that wouldn't turn over but the handbrake cable and lever would heat up when you tried to turn it over. Crikey, does sound like the belt may have jumped a tooth. If this is the case though, isn't it possible that the valves are not bent & you're just losing compression due to incorrect timing? Either way I think the course of action is to check the timing & correct if necessary, check comp. then & if ...
