Re: Are M40 and M42 sumps the same?
The M42, especially when mated to it's true home, the special and custom 318iS shell, was deemed too rapid for mountainous and curve-laden road nations such as the UK and Europe. It was only actually officially 'released' by one BMW dealer near Alice Springs, Australia, where the highway that stretc...

The M42's torque was strangled by BMW so as not to get too close to the M3.

I hate rust.
Every time I break a large piece off, I want to take a violent bite out of it and spit it out with a frantic scowl to heighten my disgust.

Battery tray is ordered from Zimmerbimmer on here.
The tray itself wasn't that bad but had a 3 inch hole neatly corroded right under the battery.
Must have spilt some crap on there as I poked my finger right through it like it was paper.

BMW Sheet Metal Repair Kits...
They sell certain things as repair kits no? Such as wheel arches and the like. Or are they just standard body parts? I want to replace my front jacking points as they are in the usual mess on closer inspection and just tidy up that whole area. I have two new wings to go on as they have rotted away (...

By Serp belt you mean single belt driving all pulleys right? http://bmwfans.info/original/images/11110_p.png My compressor is run by it's own belt off the bottom pulley with an extended pulley for neater alignment and tension. The A/C is the E30 standard but apparently an E36 Compressor would line u...

Didn't say they were cheap but not overly expensive either. If you can't be arsed to take risks they know their stuff and you pay the premium.
A Zoner near you would be solid too as obviously there are no better E30 bods.

Re: Are M40 and M42 sumps the same?
You cannot make an M42 out of an M40 by just changing the Sump and head - it was a joke. The M42 is superior in design to any other BMW engine, including current ones because it is a unique and complex poewrtain. The reason 318iS; never rust is because they need all their strength to contain the 1.8...

Re: air con questions
I have an E36 Compressor that looks to be in better condition than my current (old) E30 one.
Does the E36 Comprssor need the r134a conversion kit to make it useable with the rest of the E30 A/C setup?
Or does it bolt right in?

Re: German & Swedish Patent Parts??
I thought Sachs was the OEM supplier to BMW.
EuroCarPartd are better - they clearly label the part as an OEM supplier if they have it, such as Febi, Lemfoerder & Billstein etc.
GSF just call it 'German'.

Do BBTBs do much?
I've read conflicting arguments about them doing loads to nothing at all.
I'd do BBTB and then thorough re-map but stick with stock filter/exhaust/cams.

The part I need is available in BMW Netherlands for 65EUR.

But would still like some help with de-coding the colours on the OEM loom as I may still fit the modern stuff.

Tech 1 Sports are really starting to look great and more 'classic' than the facelift stuff when they are clean and original like yours.

Using E30 set-up with a tweaked pulley driving it via it's own belt from the M44 block. Regarding the the newer stuff leaking, that's what I said but my local garage said he has seen people use the old stuff. I think if you get it checked out by a proper place, they will check for correct pressure, ...

Some mechanics would rather fit new stuff than get the torch out and weld/heat/hack something to make it 'fixable.' I'd always rather go new parts.
