When I had an e46 it came with a 6 disc changer in the boot plus the tape head unit. I bought a BMW Business CD head unit off ebay and swapped that over myself. It didn't cost a lot and was very easy to do so I can recommend doing that if you can.

I gave pin 9 a quick clean but there's no change. It looks very clean inside C101 - no signs of any corrosion or any water getting in. I double checked the connection afterwards and it's definitely getting continuity across that pin.

What's the recommended method of fixing the roundel to these bonnets? Is it safe to drill the two holes for the pegs on the back of the badge to slot into like a regular bonnet, or is it better to cut the pegs off and fix it on another way?

Hmm, the other end of the cable terminates in the bottom of the fusebox from what I could see. I'll have another look.

The car did have an imobiliser fitted to it in the past - the wiring loom behind the glovebox looks hacked to bits.
