Re: 325i Relays
Hmmm... so what does the middle relay do then as it hasn't been modfied and it doesn't have a Cat and never has done. There are wires coming out the bottom of the socket so its connected to something(!)
Apologies I thought I'd put a date for my car... its 1990-91 (H reg)

325i Relays
What does the blue relay do that is situated with the DME (White) and Fuel Pump (orange) relays? On mine these three sit in a black box attached to the passenger side bulk head.

Re: 325i intermittent starting issue
Clutch sorted now, and we've swapped the relay to a new one, which has made a small difference, but it still seems slow to fire. Going to grab some injector cleaner next, but any other ideas as to what the issue might be. As ever when it starts it runs fine.

Re: 325i intermittent starting issue
Cheers Brian... My brother looked at the wiring diagram and realised it didn't have a relay. We've replaced the starter motor, though now its struggling to fire up. It will eventually fire up and runs fine once it does. I've eyeballed the wiring from the starter and everything seems to be connected....

Re: 325i intermittent starting issue
I take it the live on the starter motor is the big red lead.
Cheers for your help... I might give that a go tonight if I get chance.

Re: 325i intermittent starting issue
Didn't get round to banging the starter last night... after 30 minutes turning it on and off it decided to fire... I did remove and shake the Blue and Orange relays next to the White DME relay. Not sure what the other two do. I didn't notice the dashboard lights dimming, so my guess is that it wasn'...

Re: 325i intermittent starting issue
When its not working the engine doesn't even turn over. All the lights come on, on the dashboard. Usually fires up second time rather than first. Recent work has seen us service the "firing cog" on the starter motor, and change the fuel pump which had failed. Instinct makes me feel its either a solo...

325i intermittent starting issue
Hi All,
My H reg 325i is struggling to start/ turn over. When it does start it runs absolutely fine. I suspect its either the fuel pump relay or if it has one the starter relay. Are both these situated next to the DME relay?
Does anyone have the part number for these?
Cheers

Sorted...
Having cleaned the injectors out and changed the fuel pressure regulator, and altered the base idle air fuel mix. Its finally done, running like a dream
Think it was either the mix or the injectors in the end.

Dif Maintenance
Hi All, I've got a limited slip dif on the my beamer, and was wondernig what needed to be done on it to keep it running smoothe. More to the point to make it run a bit smoother. I have to say that I've not done anything with it in the 3 years I've had the car and don't think anything will have been ...

Re:
What's the cost of the conversion kit? as it does appear that the only other potential issue is the universal joint. Also do people reckon that it would be possible to exchange the old rack for the new one? And would they take the E30 one as a swap for a reccon E36/E46. Any known side effects... apa...

I think that's what they were getting at... infact you can drop an E46 one on instead...
Have to admit that thought this might be odd as the newer cars are much wider, are the bolts really in the same place and where does one get one from

Yep... £700 is not somewhere i wish to go... 8O Are the E36 racks the same shape and size? - forgive my ignorance here its not something that I've had much experience with as a rule. Steering Racks - New or Reconditioned?
Hi was wondering what experience folk had had with steering racks. Mine's been replaced once to my knowledge with a recon unit, but this appears to be failing. Anyone got any clues about cost of a new one or for that matter the cost of a recon one.

Re: 325i (1991) Idle Issues
OK fuel filter changed, in general running much better, but still a bit stall-y. I've read on a couple of threads lately about "training the ECU" is this age specific/ ECU Specific? Was trying to work out whether I needed to run the procedure or not. Also are there special high performance fuel filt...

Both ECUs were 173s, though I think the original might have been chipped at somepoint as it handles a little different to the spare. I forgot to check whether it had been opened up when I had it off.

325i (1991) Idle Issues
Hi All newbie here... I've had a quick trawl through the past posts but couldn't see one that quite matched my issue. The Car - 325i - 1991. The Fault - when the car is cold it struggles to find and stay at 600-700rpm. Eventually it gets there but not until its bounced about abit. Also when you're d...
