Re: Cheap ebay wastegates, experiences?
if you want to save some money, buy a cheap blow off, but not a cheap wastegate.
if the BOV fails, the turbine wont like it much, but it wont kill your engine. if the wastegate fails, it can be pretty nasty.

Re: Why tubro and not a blower(super charger)?
well with a turbo you are using waste power to drive the compressor, while the supercharger steals power from the engine. it does have its benefits, but i guess a correct turbo setup ends up being a better choice.
plus personally ... i hate the way chargers whine.

emissions and economy is the reason they run it so hot ... not a good deal on the long therm.

Re: boosting alloy blocks, whats the limit?
ross, yeah regarding the head bolts, i read that its a weak point on the M52s. they recommended to use arp studs instead of bolts. aside from that, as redcar said, the other items you mention are just risks present in all boosted cars, alloy or not. one thing i saw regarding M52TUs and i believe it ...

been reading e46 forums, it would seem that the M52TU and M54 head/block are almost indentical, so using that as a reference 500-600hp has been done. Thats good enough for me, not planning on going further than that.

Re: need help with drivetrain parts
Yeah i did know the ratios where similar, but i sold it to cover the expenses of the new box.
Anyhow once i put the turbo on that m52, power should still be too much for the smaller box of the 320i.
Sold it to a friend who had an E21 with a 4gear box.
Cheers.

Re: need help with drivetrain parts
As you already have a 3.15 diff you would be much better off using the 328i manual box and prop Actually i prefer the longer ratios, since this will eventually be boosted and that way i can use the beefier torque of the engine. The engined ended up being a M52TUB28 from an E46 328i, so if i manage ...

Hi guys, do you guys have some info on how much power the alloy blocks will hold? Lots of people say they wont hold much power, due to being alloy blocks, but couldnt find any case where the block failed to excesive power. im aiming for 450-550hp on a M52TUB28 with forged pistons and rods. i want to...

3.23 compact diff should fit,but will not last as it is small case diff, best bet is 3.15 from e28 524td or 3.25 from e34 524td 323ti diff is a mid case, ive got a 3.15 LSD from a 99 323ti. E36 diffs don't fit. Either an E30 M3 diff, which is often a 3.25 ratio or I believe a Z3 2.8 diff goes in and...

As long as you keep the original flow direction, position wont be an issue. Keep in mind that having injectors, fuel rails, and piping on the bottom, although nice looking, will be a PITA to work if you need to tinker with that ... But regarding functionality itself ... none of the parts depend on g...

after a fast google search, the cars with L-Jet with lambda sensors actually had a version called LU-Jetronic.
so i dont think you can add the lambda sensor to a regular L-Jet.

Re: M20 cylinder wall thickness question.
yeah my logic behind this is that on 84mm blocks, people say its safe to overbore them up to 86mm. And given that cylinder center distance on M20s is 90mm, if you overbore to 86mm, you cant have more than 4mm of wall thickness there. Then if thats the case, and with 4mm walls you are ok, i can go fo...

Re: M20 cylinder wall thickness question.
its ilegal to import used engine blocks
and even if you get it here, you cant get it on the car registry (yes, chasis number and engine block number are part of the car registry).
so im basically stuck with this block, given that, i would like to see how far i can pull it before i screw it up.

if you are going for custom pistons, why are you using the 130mm rods?
im going for a 2.8 build myself (boosted), but i will be using some 135mm eagle rods, to try to keep a nice rod/stroke ratio.
Cheers.

Its easy to start throwing out really large numbers, but its hard to relate that to car performance if this is your first turbo build. Is this just me, or it happens to anyone else? this will be a boosted car, so i guess when to turn it on or off will be part of the tuning process.

Electronics AFAIK are a PITA.
I know of a few m54 swaps, most either use stand alone or OBD1 conversion, i believe i saw one with the original engine management but that was an extremely complex and high tech adaptation. The guy was an electronics engineer if im not mistaken.
