I'm suprised you didn't take apart and clean the wiper motor contact disc though, it's a common cause of stuttering wipers and something I've had to do with all three E30s I've owned.

Re: Rev counter issues
Although this sounds like maybe an issue with the engine loom, my old 320i had that little ignition related quirk with its rev counter. I assumed it was just some kind of voltage spike occuring when the ignition was switched off as it worked fine when the engine was running. It's possible then, that...

Re: Bad squeaking developed in M40 engine
Had a spare afternoon to have a proper go at this today :) With the valve cover off it was pretty clear what the squeaking was, the cam nearest the windscreen was bone dry! Fortunately there wasn't much in the way of damage though. I took the oil spray bar off and flushed the gunk out with some WD-4...

Sounds like a problem with that specific module, it might be worth taking the instrument binacle out and checking the connections and also the brass earthing nuts.

Re: Bad squeaking developed in M40 engine
You'll have to bare with me as I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to working on engines. Is the valve cover the part below the inlet manifold with BMW stamped on it in big letters?
Is it ok running the engine without this cover on?
Cheers

Bad squeaking developed in M40 engine
Hi chaps, My 318's suddenly started making a dreadful squeaking when it's idling, it seems to be coming from somewhere round the top of the engine, not from any of the exposed belts and doesn't appear to be coming from the cam belt area either. It goes away when the engine's revved but returns once ...

Seems like a strange pair of cars to compare, I wonder how long those Maseratis lasted before breaking down

Re: 318i spluttering and losing power
Just been out to the car and the oil looks fine, cleaned the air filter out a bit and checked all the hoses for cracks, all was fine. I'm not used to working on the 4 pot and it has smaller plugs than my old 320i which I didn't have a tool to remove. Now I'm no mechanic but the dizzy cap looked fuck...

Re: alarm install
When I took my old 318is down to London to visit my sister I was paranoid someone would steal it so whenever I had to leave it somewhere for any length of time I'd take the fuel pump fuse with me and keep it in my wallet.
Much cheaper than fitting an alarm!

Re: washer jets not working?
My washer jets have been blocked on all the E30s I've owned, it seems to be a common problem and it can be a bastard to get all the crap out of them. I got good results on my new E30 by taking them out and soaking them in very hot water, then using the G string from a steel strung acoustic guitar to...

318i spluttering and losing power
Hi all, I've had my new 318i for a couple of months now and I've been driving it fairly regularly on longish runs, not pussyfooting around but not really going much above 4.5k revs either and it's been running faultlessly. This evening I was driving around town and residential areas at constant a 20...

Re: wiper issues
My wipers were doing the exact same thing and cleaning the motor contact disc last weekend sorted them out a treat. There was actually a small portion of corrosion on the disc that was functioning like the plastic notch and stopping the wipers at the top of the screen, wire wool and regreasing was t...

Re: OBC 6 Fitting into 1989 Chromie Cab
Sorry, I didn't see the "chromie" bit in your post!
I'm sure I've read somewhere that taking out the OBC is a pain in the ass, can the screw be reached by just taking the stereo out?

Re: OBC 6 Fitting into 1989 Chromie Cab
If it's the same as the setup for the 13 button one then the outside temp sensor is mounted in the passenger side brake cooling duct (next to the fog lamp) so around that area would be a good place to start looking for a loom. On a related note, does anyone know how to change the reading from Fahren...

Is the rear bumper easy to remove? If so how do you go about it?
I've just bought another E30 to replace my rotten old 320i and I need to swap the tow bars over.

a 320 full of diesel!
hi guys, my (ex) mate went and filled up my 1988 320i with diesel. it was only driven a short way accross the garage forecourt and we then syphoned pretty much all of it and filled the tank full of unleaded and cleaned the spark plugs. the beast spluttered into life eventually and we took it for a t...

a very similar thing happened to me just recently and it turned out to be the engine earth strap connection onto the sump.
definately worth checking that before pricing up starter motors!

Re: advice required for novice!
right finally had another look at the car tonight and still no joy. i first tried jumping it from another car to make sure the battery wasn't at fault. didn't work. checked the earth strap from the chassis leg to the sump and that seemed fine, both nuts nice and tight. i'm beginning to think the sta...
