Get some wet and dry sandpaper pleanty of hot soapy water 1000grit to start and work your way upto 1500 or even 2000 - the higher the grade the easier it will be to buff it back up. It all depends . . . If you have rubbed down to bare metal then make sure you use etch primer. It will protect the bare metal and prevent any rusting issues in the future.
