Yep the whole bottom end will be going off for a hefty weight reduction and a full balancing before xmas. £300 which i think is pretty damn good. I've got access to suitable measuring equipment at work to get the fine tolerances on ring gaps, running clearance (piston-skirt to bore), bearing sizes (...

I agree with all of that. The steeper rod angle will make for more wear and friction. Whether that will come back to haunt this engine i don't know yet. (Max rod angle increases from 16.8 to 19.5) I'm guess this has been covered elsewhere but does anyone know the rod length and crank stroke for the ...

Right then, in anticipation of the modified cranks showing up sometime soon I have finalised my build spec for the bottom end. In summary, 90mm throw crank, 135mm rods, standard m42 bottom end and standard m42 psitons gives me a 2 litre bottom end with an 11:1 compression ratio. Nice! Please feel fr...

The spare bottom end i have is literally just crank, rods and block so no sprocket or timing gear i'm afraid.

RE Profile gasket: I'll have to have a think about gaskets. I'm sure there'll be a fix for that little problem.

odbod, i'm still dead keen to get in on this action. From the pictures it looks like the noses of our cranks are the same so we'd need the same machining work done to both. http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg141/thetomc/crank.jpg [I'm still intending to use the 135mm rods i've got with an m42 bloc...

Mystery Crankshaft

Hi All, I bought what was sold to me as an M47 crankshaft. However i'm pretty sure its not what I need. Part number is 7790267. Doesn't show up on RealOEM Its seems to be a cross between an M47 and an M47N, i.e. it doesn't have the trigger wheel on the crank like the M47N but it does have the shorte...

Re: M42 Performance Cams

Couple of questions on the Shrick cams then...
Are you running stand alone?
Where in the rev range do they start to take off?
I'm looking to move the power band up to about 5500-7500rpm
Cheers

Wheel centres for mim alloys

Hey guys,

I know a fair few of you have 'Mim' alloys. My set don't have any centres and Mim don't sell them anymore. Has anyone found anything that fits easily.

Just thought i'd ask before i spend potentially unneccesary time making my own.

Cheers!

Does the m40 crank pulley have a vibration damper built into it? is it the same as m42?

Thanks in advance,
Tom

e30/e36 318is Cylinder Head Differences

What are the differences between the various m42/m44 heads in terms of interchangeablilty between the engines?
I need a new head for a 1990 e30 318is and was wondering whether i could use e36 1800 or 1900 heads?

Re: Dry Sump?

Custom sump guard wouldn't be the cheapest either. I know W&N do them but i'm pretty sure it wouldn't fit as the sump sits very low. My options (that I'm aware of) stand as, A. Replace lower sump and expect it to happen again soon. Meanwhile getting my broken sump modified to improve clearance. B. G...

Dry Sump?

Hi all, I have just had a wee mishap and cracked my sump, consequently leaving about 5 litres of oil all over the streets of bristol. I've got an M42 in an e21 and the sump sat pretty damn low anyway. I was wondering what people here know about running a dry sump setup on an M42. Cost, parts involve...

I've done this conversion this week. I used a lightened e21 Alpina C1 flywheel. Only fiddly bit is changing the pinion on the starter motor. This needed to be swaped out for a e21 323i pinion. I wouldn't like to guess.
Also, it was an e21 and I don't know how the amount of sound deadening compares to an e30. It was nearly two carrier bags full though and they made quite a thud hitting the bottom of the wheelie bin!

Re: E30 318is Ring tool

The tar is not problem with the right tools!! Buy a heat gun and a 1.5" wood chisel from toolstation and you'll have all the sound deadening up in half a day. Then buy a can of Nitromors (or any other Hardcore paintstripper) and some white spirit. That'll get the nasty adhesive off in no time. I've ...
