Here's a step by step guide to changing the dash:

I've done it - it took a day but wasn't too bad so long as you remember to label everything as you take it apart

The symtoms certainly sound similar to when the battery has been disconnected and the ECU is 'relearning'. I think its normal to leave it running at tickover for 10 minutes to do this. However, I think the best thing is to get a new battery. If its playing up at all under the conditions you mention ...

Re: Which battery?
The Varta batteries were removed and set back to Varta who discovered that after almost 50 years in Salt water, 60% of the batteries would still hold a charge. You don't get that with Halfords! I don't suppose that Halfords go to that length to test their batteries though :D I've got a halfords hea...

Re: 325 mpg?
I've had over 420 miles from a tank in my 325i touring on a long motorway run. That was from Fishguard in West Wales to London and then a return trip to Bournemouth the following day. And I wasn't dawdling along either. I routinely get 360 miles to a tank when doing my 8 mile town/cross country comm...

This would be a particularly useful addition. Is there any way the existing 6-button OBC gong could be wired up to do the job?

I managed to get a complete new system on ebay for about 20 quid (about 18 months ago - and its the only one I ever saw on there), but it really was a pain to take the old one out and thread the new one in. Would have been much easier to do when I changed the dashboard, six months earlier... Its nor...

Just got the car back - apparently one of the link bolts needed tightening. It seems a bit better but I need to give it a good drive tomorrow. Why they couldn't find the loose bolt on my previous 2 visits is beyond me....

Re: Failed MOT today
Its a real shame when this happens, but then they are old cars. Sounds similar to what mine recently failed on. The killer for me was the rear bake pipes, as you have to move the petrol tank and/or crossmember ... I hope its not the same ones you need. Front shock can be a PITA too and its best to d...

The saga continues - still got the knocking from the front. Its been back to garage twice and they seem a bit clueless to be honest. Its been getting worse too but the garage asure me its safe. So I've taken it in again today and they are going to take it all apart and put it together again. They mu...

Mine did this too - turns out it was the wire for the sensor rubbing on the fanbelt around the front of the engineMy oil pressure light comes on sometimes on tickover, but its had a new oil pump, pressure release valve and switch.

Re: Knocking from front
Cheers Ant.
The first thing the garage looked at was the damper top nuts, then put it up on the lifter and checked underneath. They checked the wheel nuts too. I'll have a look again myself when its stopped raining.

Knocking from front
A couple of weeks ago my touring failed the MoT big time on front shocks, stabilizer bar links, rear springs and basically all the bake pipes. I think everything was original and obviously built to last exactly 16 years! Anyway got a local garage to do the work and got them to fit new springs at the...

I found it easiest to use a bleeding kit to pump the old fluid out. Also don't push the brake pedal too far as you may push the pistons beyond the normal range of travel and damage the seals. Following the recommendations in Bentleys I bled the furthest from the reservior first (rear offside) gettin...

Just bought a little box on ebay to convert my touring to keyless entry. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4640562566 Bargain :D This is mainly to get around the fact that I can't turn the key in the drivers lock so I have to open the car from the passengers door or the tailgate. ...

Could also be the rubber hoses that run from the back of the engine bay up to the fuel rail at the front of the engine. After time they perish and you can smell petrol. Sounds like the relay, mate. Its either the largest one in the fuse box (black ~8x3x3 cm), or if you have headlight wipers it could be the extra relay attached to the washer reservoir. If its the later you can disconnect that and windscreen washing will still work. Probably best to clean all the con...
