Re: E46 320d Problems
My dad had one a few years ago and had quite a few problems with it...........Turbo went and a few weeks later the fuel pump packed in and a few other things went on it also, It was serviced regular and wanted for nothing. He had it from brand new and got rid 3 years later with 120k on the clock ! ...

Re: E46 320d Problems
Checked it out. It was mint. 39000 miles on the clock, every extra, one of the first cars I've seen in recent times with both climate control and a sun roof, but surprisingly no cd player! It had a new turbo fitted a while ago, so that should be grand. I decided that it was a chance not to be missed...

E46 320d Problems
Hi, I've to go get a new car, I'm going to be doing a few more miles so I'm afraid the e30's out (untill I find the space for a second car). I was looking at e46 320d's and a friend of mine pointed out that they have been known to munch engines (swirl valves, throttle the engine when using cruise co...

The only E36 coupe you're going to see 40mpg from is the 316i. They're underpowered with 102bhp (0-60 in 12 seconds) but make a fine daily smoker. They have decent low down torque which helps. The chain driven M43 engine is so much better than the M40 and is very reliable. Their only real weakness ...

Re:
I've never really rated the M42 engine in the E36 - it suits the E30 fine but seems a bit out of place in the E36. The 320i makes a lovely noise, has better real world performance (don't let anyone kid you otherwise) and is about the same on fuel. I used to get 30 mpg from both of mine. The only E3...

The 318is has M-tech springs and shocks, should try and make sure if any shocks have been replaced they fitted the shorter traveling M-Tech items and not the cheaper standard ones  Any way of verifying what they are? Will do Matt, though I assume they're not easy to check if they're missed on the MOT's?
What are the main differences between the 318i and the is? or were all the 2 door 318's sports? Everything for sale here (Ireland) appear to be badged 318is.

Re:
The 318iS is okay but a 320i is just nicer - lovely engine noise and the two I had (vanos and non vanos) were both pretty respectable of fuel (30 mpg). A 1994-5 320i Coupe with the iron block engine is a nice thing. The iS does not handle any better than the six pot btw. I wouldn't expect it to han...

Before I bought my E30 iS, I was looking at a few E36 318iS, early ones admittedly, but all the same I didn't see any with cruise control, though I'm 99% sure it was an option. From speaking to a number of E36 owners, 40mpg on a run would be as good as it gets, the M42/M44 just isn't built for econ...

Thinking of buying a e36 318is, what should I look out for?
Hey, I need a new car, it's got to be something reliable and has to be pretty comfortable on the motorway, I think a late e36 318is is about the right thing to go for and I'm just wondering what I should be looking out for (as in what usually goes wrong and where do they start to rot). Also how are ...

Re: Slow starter
It could be a temperature sensor issue.
My old golf used to behave similarly, I figured it was that it wasn't cold enough for the choke to come on and wasn't warm enough for it to start on the running amount of fuel.
Just a thought.

Thanks Paulie30, Just finished doing the job. Replaced both pipes under the manifold while I was in there. The other pipes looked ok but I'll probably do them when I get a chance, the sight of petrol dripping onto the engine made the two under the manifold more urgent!

Hi,
Can anyone tell me the inside diameter on part number 16 from the following link?
http://bmwfans.info/original/E30/2-T/31 ... l-13_0289/
My car's smells of petrol and I can see it coming from this pipe, I want to get a new piece from the motor factors.
Thanks
Peter

You've probably got an air lock somewhere in the heater matrix. not exactly sure how you cure this but I'm sure someone'll let you know soon!

Re: Heater failier
you should hear the valve click when you turn the heat up, as in when you move it from fully cold.
Have you changed the coolant recently? has it been happening for long?
It could be an airlock.

I was out in the car on friday, the car was running fine. I stopped off at a shop and when I got back into the car and started up it was missing on one cylinder. My 316 gets about 32-34mpg on my ordinary commute. On a long journey recently I got about 38mpg out of it!
When I'm sitting in traffic it gets very thirsty.

Re: Good braking
If they're locking up already, upgrading them will probably make them even more likely to lock up. If the wheel locks up, it's because the brakes have stopped the wheel with more force than the tyre can transmitt to the road. That's why locking up in the wet happens first, there's less grip therefor...

Just a thought, but have you checked the bonnet switch?
There's a switch the same as the door ones just over the lights on the left (from the drivers seat) of my car.
It turns the inside lights on when the bonnet opens!

They refused because it was lowered?
How lowered is it?
Did you try all the tyre fitters?
If they're only wearing on one edge, it's the wheels need to be tracked and alligned and such, not that they're cheap tyres.

Re: How much for a drivers seat?
If you take the adjuster mechanism off your old seat then it'll be on the right side!
It's a bit more work, but mightn't be a bad plan!
(This is assuming that it's not the adjusters that are broken)
You can always strip down your old seat and see how hard it is before deciding!

I tried checking these the other day, followed some pictures I found on another thread, couldn't really see them that well. The picture on the other thread had the manifold removed, should it be possible to check th...

The light behind the light switch comes off the same fuse as the rear window heater.
If you're replacing that bulb I'd recommend taking out the foglight switch so you can see what you're doing.

To be honest I was shocked at the high 30's, I was getting about that from a 1.3 golf.
There are some pluses to having a 316 (not many), and I don't have the lightest foot in the world!

The exhaust is slightly sooty, nothing crazy though. And my fuel consumption isn't rediculous, it's in the high 30's.

Firstly I've a 91 316i, M40 engine. When I start it first thing in the morning it appears to have no power, unless I rev it slightly (to about 2500rpm) after this it drives completely fine. It feels as though there is a blockage somewhere and it's cleared with a few revs. If I try to drive it withou...
