Re: MOT emissions - Brianmooore?

Thanks Brian. So if I read that right, that is for cars post Aug 92 (but pre 95) that would usually require at Cat test? I'm away at moment so not with the car (my BMW guy has taken the car for MOT) but I was told last week the tester initially said because I hadn't updated the V5 with the new engin...

MOT emissions - Brianmooore?

Hopefully Brianmooore will see this... Is this still the loophole for the emissions test? 1993 touring with a 1999 M44 engine. Just dropped my car off for MOT and the tester said it all changed with the new MOT regs and this no longer applies, so my car will not pass the emissions test as it doesn't...

Re: using RealOEM help

Are you sure its the sensor? They rarely give issues, it's more likely the wiring from the plug. Brianmooore will give a better explanation, but the copper in the wire hardens over time and starts to breakdown. The usual fix is to the replace a length of the wire (20-30cm or so) from the plug. An E3...

Got to love an E30

June last year I MOT'd my touring, did 2000 miles in 10 days for work and then parked it up at the end of June as I needed to use my van for work - I haven't touched the touring since. On Sunday just gone after nearly 10 months, I gave the touring some fresh fluids, stuck the battery back in and fir...

Re: Engine Mounting Angles

M40/42/44 and M50/52 (and S5* engines) all have the same bolt pattern and mounting angle. M20 has the same bolt pattern but sits slightly more up right as Dan says, so to use an M20 box on an M52 for example, you need a modified mount and gear linkage. M10 and M30 match each other but not the engine...

The best would be 205/55/15 all round for the standard 15" BBS wheels.
IMO 225s would be too wide for a standard E30 wheel.

I had an early '89 318i touring with side skirts but my '93 LUX touring doesn't have them (and never did according to the spec sheet) - I think when buying new, the buyer could basically spec what they wanted and didn't want if they were willing to pay. My LUX touring was sold with an Mtech 2 steeri...

Re: E36 wiring in EWS similar to E30

I was under the impression that all M52 engines had EWS, so as your using the M52 ECU, you either need to add all the EWS bits and bobs or get the EWS removed from the ECU - which is probably the easiest route for you.

Also anymore tricks to getting the pilot bearing out? Tried the grease trick, didnt work for me Never known it to fail, as long as the rod you're hammering through the centre hole is a nice tight fit, and there's no air trapped. Any air acts as a shock absorber, reducing the peak pressure forcing t...

How did you realise the light wasn't working?
Chances are you haven't run the tank low enough to get the light to come on - on both my E30s, the light only comes on once the needle has dropped well below the red.

M20s usually run at the 1/4 mark iirc, so it sounds about right. M40s are around the 1/2 mark. But it obviously depends on the thermostat fitted.

The problem is how much people want for M50 manifolds etc. I would be cheaper and arguably easier to start with the right engine in the first place. It would slot in the same as any other 24v conversion, but unless it's free, a 523i engine is a little pointless IMO - yes it's a 2.5 but it's strangled to 170bhp so is an expensive way to get 170bhp when an M20 will be easier (in terms of bolting straight in, no messing with exhausts, wiring etc et...

I'd go for the Bilstein B12 kit - Bilstein B8s and Eibach springs. It gives a 30mm drop, so 15mm lower than OEM Sport springs and gives a decent ride without having to worry about speed bumps and shite roads.

And yes, E46 cab rear top mounts are the ones to go for.

can you not just use the m40 / m42 loom for m44 conversions?? The M40 loom won't work. You can use an E30 M42 loom but you need to swap to everything M42 (loom, inlet, ECU etc etc) from an E30. For what it's worth, I used everything M44 and it makes for a great car. The conversion (including wiring...
