Re: 325i mpg
I've been running a well-maintained 325i auto for a last year or so and my average mpg according to OBC is slightly below 24 mpg (this includes a 3000+ mile roadtrip).
All in all this makes me feel good about the planned purchase of e34 540i - shouldn't be much worse

In the dry, they're really predictable. Not to nitpick but they're just as predictable in the wet or snow (provided you have decent winter tyres). When I say predictable I mean if you put your foot down on a wet roundabout your rear wheels predictably :) will lose grip. In this aspect they're not w...

Not too keen on calling out AA, too many callouts already after water pump failed, then a coolant hose burst. The joys of having an older car and being a numpty.bobbin1982 wrote:How about RAC or AA?

Re: Locked out of car with dead battery, no keys - ideas?
Jacking up the diff is a great idea should I need to drag it - I can then simply put something like plastic trays underneath. As for attempting to open the door from outside - I'm afraid I have all the mechanical aptitude of a drunk gorilla combined with complete lack of confidence, so that's out fo...

Re: Locked out of car with dead battery, no keys - ideas?
Thanks for the ideas Brianmoore, helpful as ever! I'll try the BMW route, hopefully a copy of V5 will be a sufficient proof of ownership. Getting underneath is problematic to say the least as the car is boxed in from three sides by brick walls and there's only a foot or so of space on driver's side....

More likely your ignition switch is starting to play up Or there is an immobiliser connected in the start circuit. Not an auto gearbox by any chance, is it? What would be the likely suspect with auto gearbox? I've had intermittent starting issues a couple of times but never managed to figure out th...

Locked out of car with dead battery, no keys - ideas?
My touring can only be opened via remote, as the only key I have works in ignition but doesn't work in the doors. While the battery was ok this was working, but now the car has been left for a longer period over holiday the battery is dead. Remote still bleeps but the car doesn't have enough juice t...

Being the driving legend I consider myself to be I thought "pah, what winters" last year during the snowfall. Guess what - no friggin chance of driving a 325i auto on wide summer tyres in snow, it simply does not work. Not even Ayrton Senna would be able to drive it, no matter how gentle you are wit...

Not tiptronic, just your good old fashioned auto. I'm not sure that all of them are switchable with S(ports) and E(conomy) modes, both of mine were, switching to S mode does make it hold onto gear for longer. 4 speeds, should be very reliable but changing the fluid wouldn't hurt. I'm sure someone mo...

Help! Leaking power steering fluid
Driving back to UK we stopped in Hannover, Germany where I noticed fluid leaking from my touring. Is it safe to drive to Calais like this or am I risking losing the steering if t...

I don't think single lights make it older - IIRC all 4 cylinder versions were single lights while 6 cylinders were twins, have a look on Youtube If you're going for a swap why not buy a 316 or 318? Saves converting the lights :) and IMHO it's e...

Basic repairs shouldn't be rocket science, can you be bothered though? Some guys on Retro Rides organised a get-together and got some pointers on weldi...

I can understand where you're coming from, but not everyone knows cars inside and out. If the car does break down on German autobahn or somewhere in Poland it might not be possible to fix it on the spot, so towing it to a garage is the only option, and mine is automatic so might have to be put on th...

I'm planning something similar at the end of July - driving all the way to Latvia and back (roughly 2200 km from Calais to Riga one way). How did you arrange insurance and breakdown cover for your trip?

Otherwise going faster (while still below the limit) on the left hand lane before leaving the motorway could be classed as undertaking? I do it quit...

Blah blah blah (especially the video commentary!), it sounds like he's about to break out in a spontaneous Hallelujah chorus.

Pacerpete is probably on his way to the seller as we speak.
