Re: Ignition barrel replacement
I had this problem on my e36 a year ago. I drilled a hole in the barrel holder to locate the locking tab, then pressed it with a screwdriver and removed the barrel. It's a bodge but it worked and has been fine since.

Re: Bmw E30 estate engine conversion
You can still use the E30 M42 bits on the M44. If you could pick up a damaged E30 M42 you;d be laughing. You can then swap the M42 loom, intake and exhaust manifolds, coil packs, exhaust and the sumps. Use an E30 M42 ecu and get a good chip for it. It will run the M44 nicely. The only issue is the t...

Re: Removing strut from support arm
Get yourself a balljoint splitter. They aren't expensive and if you plan on doing your own work, it's essential. As for the springs, you'll need a spring compressor to get standard springs back on. If using lowering springs they can usually be built up without it. If buying spring compressors, get a...

Re: M42 head gasket
All you need is the head gasket, the bolts and the front rubber profile gaskets. Elring gaskets are good quality. Any decent motor factors should be able to get them. Not sure if you can get the profile gasket outside BMW. You'd be best getting all the gaskets from BMW though, less chance of oil lea...

You'll have to get a remap or chip to get it running right.
You'll also need to modify the airbox to take the bigger afm.
Not sure of the gains.

The IS rad is bigger than the M40 one. The M40 will work fine though. I've used them before without issue.

On the fuses. There is nothing worse than a pile of cheap shitty looking fuses in the fusebox. it's one of the first things I change whenever i buy an E30. Has to be the genuine fuses for me.
Coolant I'm not worried about though, I use blue coolant, but it wouldn't bother me.

I never found the rack too bad, even putting in an E36 rack is pretty simple.
I agree on the rear beam bushes though & I don't like rear wheel bearings either.

I have 15 inch wheels on the back with snow tyres and bottletops on the front with good grippy tyres. I find it great. I can go nearly anywhere. The 15" snow tyres are excellent. I can check the make if you want. They're 195/50s.

I use a 320 as my daily. I get about 32mpg on a run and obviously less around town. I love it. The only four pot I would have as a daily is an IS. I'd take the 320 over the 318 anyday. The tax on a 325 in Ireland makes it very difficult, so the 320 is a more sensible option. Decent power and a lovel...
