Rotterdam to Hull : a Zoner on here ?

Seen on the P&O ferry last night. Spoke briefly to the owners, I should have have asked... Its a 316 with carb, no rust and a moonroof. They were heading home after a trip to the Fatherland to visit the place of its birth. More inspiration for me to get the tank sorted and back on the road. IMG_0303...

Re: Low idle

Hi Shed. that TPS looks like the item fitted to a switchable ZF auto ... although testing is the same.
Listen for a microswitch click as you gently open the throttle butterfly by hand. Maybe necessary to measure continuity to be sure the ECU is receiving the TPS signals.

Re: Wet Rear Carpet

as i recall, the thick foam under the carpet stays wet for an age.
If you've fixed the rear seat leak, i would keep the rear footwell carpet up and away from the floorpan either to help dry it out or observe any further water getting in from an area not related to the boot/rear window weld.

Re: Wet Rear Carpet

i would leave the rear seats out, and then pull up the PS carpet. Use a really fat roll of newspaper to keep the carpet off the floorpan. Water is so hard to trace so you gotta work backwards from where it appears (just like rust) Your previous pics show water appearing from the sound deadening unde...

Re: e30 start-up : 3 years

Mart, Thanks for the reminder on E10.
I'm going to attempt to empty the tank with a battery on the fuel pump, fuel can in the engine bay with hose from injector rail.
I have a pump electrical connector and a long pair of leads to be safe, then put in 5 litres of fresh petrol before firing up.

thanks for the quick reply.

I'll report back on what I find.
Does V-power petrol cause any less problems. I guess the ethanol is the issue due to absorption of water .

e30 start-up : 3 years

thoughts and experiences please.

After three years laid up in a dry lock-up... whats the realities of starting up the M42 318iS ?

new freshly charged battery
check inside fuel tank for rust / sludge
rotate engine on crank first
check clutch and brake fluids and radiator expansion tank/coolant

TIA

Hey Jimmy. draining not necessary.
2 things i would check:
i/ the thin tube from the top of radiator to expansion tank is clear
ii/ maybe a level sensor wiring issue . ..

Correct, that is the cable going to the OBC code box. If connected, this would replace a small green jumper .
At this stage leave alone... you have a bit of unusual wiring in your pic that could do with sorting out first

Re: Uk Stomp test equivalent

Hi Bristol. non-US ( ie UK/Oz ) vehicles can utilise the stomp test with a 12volt bulb on a pair of fly leads. For a 325i running motronic 1.3, connect the bulb across pin 15 (grey) of the ECU and the green/white fuse 10 when you switch the ignition on, the bulb will glow. follow the stomp sequence ...

In that case, cutting and splicing your current loom is doable.
As always, time and patience are the key. The M5x lads will no doubt assist and offer the best location of the ECU which on the e36 was positioned under the scuttle.

John. assuming the M42 engine and loom were previously from an e36 as the e30 never had an automatic M42 option. such a swap is possible but as you have learnt, not necessarily straightforward. The e36 air intake is very different and more complex. In the past I have taken the M42 e36 engine and ins...

Correct .the air slide valve. But I read your post again and there is more to your problem than just the idle.

The jetronic system is complicated and as you have noted , items such as the cold start injector can be the problem.
Can you confirm the combination of ECU and engine size.

Re: TECHNICAL HELP NEEDED

Hi carlitto.
Reading through the idle issues I had with an L Jetronic in a 323i , I was lucky to have a second working system to compare.
The problem in the end was caused by corrosion inside the water heated idle valve.

Re: TECHNICAL HELP NEEDED

Hey carlitto.
Can you confirm that your set-up is using the two timing sensors on the gearbox bell housing.
These two sensors tell the ECU what are the engine revs and TDC.
