Cooling problem

I have a cooling problem with my 90' 316iA. The temperature gauge is over 3/4 in this hot weather although it doesn't reach the red. When I top up the radiator, after a few days the coolant level drops to the bottom of the tank but never any more. I can't see any leaks and there's no steam coming fr...

Easy job. Is worth changing the oil strainer at the same time.

I had the same problem on my 316i last year. It turned out to be the governor valve sticking. Not too difficult to repai; drain the box and remove the sump. Drop the exhaust, heat shield, prop shaft and the rear mounts. Remove the valve casing the pull the valve off the output shaft. Strip down and ...

Rear subframe bushes???

I'm in the process of changing the rear subframe / axle carrier bushes. I've taken off the subframe and have cut/melted the old bushes out. Does anybody know how far the new ones have to be driven in ? There is roughly 15mm protuding from the bottom of the hole to the flange of the new bush but they...

316i idling problem...

Hi, I appear to have a problem with my 90' 316iA idling. When starting from cold, providing you don't touch the throttle pedal, it idles OK. However, the minute you touch the throttle, ie when reversing out of the drive in the morning etc the revs drop right down and the engine chugs away and tries ...

Fuel consumption 316i Auto...

Hi, Does anybody know the correct fuel consumption for a 90' 316iA. The car has been serviced recently (new plugs, filters, dis cap & rotor arm, ATF & strainer etc) and is returning around 30mpg on a motorway run (75 mph) or around 20mpg around town. This is roughly the same as my old 92' E36 325iA....

I had exactly the same problem on my 316i. The governor valve was the problem. Not hard to put right. You need to remove the exhaust, heat shield, prop shaft front connection, output flange (30mm deep socket required) rear casing held on by 9 bolts and you may need a puller to remove the spacer betw...

Auto box problem...

Got a problem with the auto box on my 316i. When cold will only change out of first at 5000 rpm and the gear changes are quite rough. When warm, no problem.
Changed the oil and added some Wynn's Auto Gearbox additive but still the problem persists. Any ideas before I change the box???

Had exactly the same problem with mine. You need to take out the wiper motor, take off the gear cover and clean out and re-grease. Most probably dirty contacts. You can check the relay's OK by using a multi-meter on the plug and testing the switch settings. Easy job.

Just replaced mine, the Haynes manual method is quite easy to set. Important to get the belt on the teeth correct as one tooth out won't damage engine but will sound like a diesel when started up. The camshaft is in the position when the valves on No.1 cylinder are both at equal height. The cranksha...

Draper sell the spanner for BMW fans, costs roughly £4.95 from most tool shops. Alternatively unbolt the fan pulley, then unbolt the water pump which removes the fan (M40) and work on a bench to remove the fan from the clutch.
