Re: Is the 320i a good engine for an E30?

Thanks guys - sounds exactly the same as the E36 318is Vs 320i! I thought it may be better in a lighter shell. What I will do in that case is look for a 316i in good condition and a 325 lump to drop in. I'm being very lazy now - are there any good posts to look at to show how to go about the convers...

Is the 320i a good engine for an E30?

Hi guys I used to run around in a '91 316i for work. I currently have a '95 318iS coupe for work and a '93 MR2 putting out just under 300bhp for a weekend car. I have no intention to sell either of these but fancy making use of the mother-in-laws garage to do an E30 restoration as I loved my old one...

Re: Returning member....

^ Nope - I have heard that the 318is M42 engined cars are a real drivers car. I have the M42 in my E36 and it is too underpowered for the weight of the E36, but because it is 4 cylinder the balance of the car is the best of all the E36's apart from the M3. In the E30, it will perform loads better an...

Looks a lovely car but if it were mine I couldn't sit there revving its nuts off doing burnouts. Don't get why people put unnecessary strain on engines in that way!!!

Re: Returning member....

Welcome back, Rob. It's probably not too difficult to convert a 316i with a larger engine, but why not buy a larger engined one, e.g. 325i to begin with? That way, you get the appropriate uprated suspension, rear disc brakes, etc. I would love to but I need to get a cheap E30 to start with and it s...

Evening chaps. I joined in summer 2006 when I bought an old 316i as a beater. I turned out to love the car and was gutted to the bottom of my stomach when I crashed it in January 2007. I currently have a '95 318is as a beater which I have spent time improving having got it in a dirty unloved state. ...

Another E30 dies :(......

Im sad to say that I smashed my old 316i to pieces this morning. I was at the back of a long line of cars going up a hill with the full sun on the brow of the hill. A queue built up on the other side of the hill (blind side), people on my side had to hit their brakes very hard, but those of us comin...

Re: Juddering when accelerator slightly in use....

Mine is currently off the road with a knackered fuel pump so no more info from me. It should be back on the road next week.

Just out of curiosity - I wonder if its anything to do with the fuel pump being dodgy at certain rpm?

Good on you mate - I have an old 316 as a daily driver. I have fallen in love with it (as well as my MR2) but I cant really justify spending any money on it - not because its old but because it has the pants M40 engine. Are you doing it purely for the lovge of the E30 shape, or any other reason (ins...

Re: More woes :( ....

Thanks for the reply. The only time it judders is at 2000rpm when I am accelerating ever so slightly. It is fine in all other situations apart from this new Motorway business. Yesterday on the motorway I tried decellerating and then accelerating with my foot to the floor, its still juddered. Then wh...

1991 316i M40 engine (137k) Drove to London today (40 miles) - didnt miss a beat. Drove back this evening at same speed - sitting at 72 on motorway and it began to hesitate, in a way that I can only describe like it was not getting constant fuel supply or maybe a missfire. Thanks for the replies chaps. Wasnt suure if it is one of these problems as I can lock the car fine, just cant un-lock it. I suspect its the broken L shape bit.

Dave - is that link for central locking or manual locking do you think?

Cheers

Weird central locking thing happening....

My central locking has worked for the 8 months I have had the car. However, It was always stiff when turning to lock (Drivers side). This morning, the c/l wouldnt unlock from the drivers door. I managed to open the car using the boot lock. I went back to the drivers side and the car would then re-lo...

Re: Juddering when accelerator slightly in use....

Cheers mate

I have to say when Im pulling away on a hill mine bucks around like its at a Rodeo, so I guess it could well be a clutch issue.

Its only just started happening when on slight throttle, I suspect it will get worse.

Looks like I will be doing my first clutch change!

These AFM units have a lot to answer for!

I have a spare so I think I will connect it back up and play with the adjustment screw to see what happens.

Juddering when accelerator slightly in use....

When I decelerate so that my pedal is just slightly engaged I get Kangaroo petrol judders. The car pulls like a train to 5000 rpm - no hesitations. Its only when lightly accelerating that I get the judders and this can be anything from 20 - 40mph in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear. Any ideas what this could b...

Weird rear screen / demister wire problem

Basically my rear screen wont demist.

I have:

1/ changed the switch
2/ checked both the power supply at the window and
3/ the eath on the other side and
4/ checked continuity on the screen.

All are fine! So how can it not work????

Re: how many miles should i be getting out of my 316i?

Well my '91 4 door 316i which has got 133k on the clock and has been treated pretty badly by previous owners is giving me 370 miles to the tank every week. Mine is also running rich.

Have you checked things like the o2 sensor?

I replaced my AFM and ICV from the scrap yard on my 91 316i. Its running so much better but is still smelling rich and theres a very slight lumpiness to the idle.

Replaced blue temp sensor.

Any other ideas???

Fought with the dash for an hour before realising the Haynes instructions on dash removal were for the 5 series.
