Car won't start, which pins do I use to check starter?
My 325i Touring died 2 days before I got my M3!! She was going fine, I stopped for 5 mins, then lights but no action! Which pins do you put a wire between to check the starter motor? I tried shorting across the terminals, which only caused the solenoid to spin (not engage). Any other advice? I have ...

E46 Bonnet won't open
Anyone know if you can open the bonnet if the cable has snapped? looking at a 328i tomorrow (that apparently used to have a supercharger fitted) and I'm keen to see under the bonnet before I commit to buy. Is there a way to open it (like you can with the E30! ) PM me if there is please!!!! Ch...

I'm having this same problem... looks like I'm gonna be taking the LSD off to rule it out! So far I have changed rear bearings, backplates, h'brake shoes, discs, prop and the NS drive shaft!! Your right though... the sound does seem to be coming from the offside! :? My noise escalates with speed tho...

Aha!! I'm having trouble too!
How much backlash should there be? (LSD) I have about 2 cm of circumferential tyre movement between teeth. Feels a bit too much to me!!??
I'm guessing its gonna be a strip the diff job too?

Re: LSD failing noises?
Doesn't seem to make the noises in reverse!?!?
(straight line)
Although it does make another 'churning' noise when I reverse whilst turning.
I really don't want to put the standard diff back on, cos if it isn't that, I doubt I'll have the patience to put the LSD back on!!

LSD failing noises?
What sort of noises do LSD's make when they are on their way out? I've got a kinda cyclic-whiring noise coming from the back end, and I can't seem to get rid of it!! :x I've changed the discs, calipers, h'brake shoes, bearings, backplates, prop and centre bearing. Only really got Diff, G'box, H'brak...

Re: Different drive shafts??
The diameter is larger on the new nut, it fits over the shaft easily.
The box says 318 - 320 (IIRC) but it's defo the same bearing!
Thread is a bit knackered, so it would've been helpful to use new nut. Looks like I'm gonna have to find a big-ass tap and die set now!!

Different drive shafts??
Are there different size drive shafts?
I'm in the process of changing my rear bearings (325i Touring), and the nut that came with the bearing (from Euro car parts) is larger than the one I took off!!?
It actually fits over the end of the shaft!!

Cheers Brett,
I'll dig out the chassis number. It's a '89 325i Touring, with '90 325i Sport suspension (the same I believe).

Re: What the hell is wrong with my car!!??
Gonna do the rear bearings soon... It'll give me a chance to change the knackered back-plates too, which keep popping into my mind as a possible reason for the noise. (Handbrake shoe pins coming out, and shoes twisting in drum)
I thought Diffs whined?? It's more of a low cyclic whirring noise.

I changed the complete running gear from my Sport to my Touring just over a year ago, and I've just noticed something (possibly) strange. I've been having cyclic (whum-whum-whum...) noises coming from the rear for a little while now, which increase with speed. (It didn't happen just after the transp...

When I turn the engine off in my 325i Touring, the Rev counter creeps up to 1000 rpm, and the mpg swings over to 30-40 mpg!!

Bump it if you can, if it starts its probably the starter - If it doesn't it's probably the battery.
