Cheers Ross. I've shipped loads of stuff over the years and I've always felt it would be a shame if something got damaged in transit due to a lack of proper packaging and the few extra minutes that would take. I might have gone a bit over the top but it wouldn't have been any fun for either of us ha...

Re: 3.0 litre stroker
Dunno but here's a picture of an M54B30 piston - if you take 5 mm off the top I would have thought you'll take the ring with it before too long.

Re: 3.0 litre stroker
the "standard" build is an M52B28 crank with 130mm rods - using the 135mm rods you would need to machine the tops of the pistons considerably (5mm?) to keep them from contacting the head. I don't think it can be done - there wouldn't be enough material left to hold the first compression ring.

I would do a compression or leakdown test before taking it apart; that will confirm what, if anything, needs refreshing. Unless you just want to do it for the fun of it.

Re: new project M20 supercharged advise needed
Thanks, all understood - I learned a fair bit about boost levels, turbos, overheated intake air and intercoolers as owner of a twin turbo 911. My M20 application in a Z1 has space constraints and I'm also not looking for mega horsepower.

I believe M52B28, M52TUB28 and M54B30 rods are all 135mm.
Metric Mechanic sells 2 different engine kits for the 89.6mm crank. The lower spec one uses custom pistons with 135mm rods from an M3; the higher spec one uses custom pistons with custom 138mm rods.

I would offer that if you're going with custom pistons why not go with an 89.6mm crank to maximise the potential that custom pistons can provide?

A bit of speculation on my part as I haven't done the maths - did Alpina increase the CC size for performance reasons or to reduce the CR as they were using a longer stroke crank with the same rods?

What are the the places on a touring to look for rust? It seems the scuttle on all the variants plus the obvious wings and wheel arch lips and the hatch on the touring. Anything else to look out for? tia

The throttle position sensor however is an open question. Is it running properly? Is it set in the right postion? How would I know. Shamelessly plagiarised from the E30 idle FAQ: Now before we begin to re-install the boot and other items, we will need to check the throttle switch on the bottom of t...

Did you change the throttle position sensor? Check that it's installed correctly and providing the WOT value at WOT. Is the TB opening all the way when the pedal is floored?

Short stroke, large bore is usually the basis for a high revving engine but not with the heavy stock internals and cast crank. Doesn't make much sense; go with a 2.7 or 2.8 as there's no replacement for displacement.

Not sure you can - EWS on recent engines is very well integrated into the ECU. You may need a known EWS/ECU/key combo.

I had the chance to buy a 3.0 crank from an N52 engine (sucessor to the M54) with a cracked timing chain cover for €2 until I realised the main bearing journals are smaller than the M20/50/52/54 engine so wouldn't work. Shame about that!
