Removing Steering Column

The steering column is a thick tube of steel that connects your steering wheel to the rest of the steering system. To make sure it doesn't come away while you're driving in some sort of Mr. Bean "comedy" fashion, BMW bolted in place rather sturdily. But if you're stripping your car down to the shell, here's how to get that column out.

Tools

  • 13mm socket
  • 13mm spanner
  • Hammer

Procedure

Start by undoing the two bolts in the firewall and also the one on the clamp which can be seen below:

Give it a few taps with a hammer and slide it up the column

Here you can see the shear bolt and the slot it is in
