The large stud with a wire going direct to the battery should also have a large wire on it that goes to the alternator.
The yellow/black wire goes to the small terminal on the solenoid, and the green/black unloader wire will have to be connected to the inner large stud.

i've just been looking at my wiring, the black/green wire, what does it do exactly and if it's not connected what happens to the motor??

both the bk/y and bl/gr where on the same post, just removed the bl/gr and the ring terminal has come off. any ideas?

Nothing happens to the starter motor if the black/green isn't connected - just that your windows, roof, heater fan and door mirrors won't work.
The E30 starter motor has a seperate terminal for the black/green wire, but I understand this is absent on the M30 motor. In this case, it should be connected to the inner large stud; the one that has a short link to the motor itself.
