Hoping someone can offer their expertise, I had a trawl through the forum to see if there was a response to this sort of issue already so apologies in advance if I am boring any of you.
Car starts and runs fine but the temperature gauge seems to have a mind of its own going up and down slowly when it fancies it. I have been told I could have an air pocket/block somewhere that may be causing the issue?
I had a Kenlow fan fitted to the car years ago anyway to avoid overheating and the cylinder head was also replaced and only done around 15,000 in the last 4-5 years!
Is an E30 325i Convertible.
It never reaches the red and drops back down again and sometimes revving the engine a little brings the temperature down a bit (viscous fan has been removed when Kenlow fitted before anyone thinks the speed of the engine might make the fan turn quicker!).
Any assistance/ideas - I am not brilliant mechanically at working on the E30's as I was an air cooled man in the VW scene previously but I like to give things a go myself!

1) Shrink your sig pic, before the mod team do it for you!
2) Your problem is a brass nut on the back of the dash cluster. Read this:

Hi Grrrmachine - thanks! Re point 1) I may need the mod team to do this for me as I have not been on here in so long and I cannot remember how to do this! Its certainly not a deliberate action!
2) Had a read, so this explains the temperature gauge going up with the engine temperature but then fluctuating as it pleases really...!? Does seem strange but appreciate the feedback and will give it a go first.

How is the fan switched on/off? If using a temp sender, the sender might be the problem. Alternativly if you haven't flushed the system, try that as well.

If the needle jumps rapidly then the problem is the brass nut. If the movement occurs over many seconds, then it's a cooling system fault.
Best place to start would be to dispose of the Kenlowe on ebay, and use the proceeds to buy a quality viscous fan coupling.
With the OE system in working order, there is zero chance of any overheating occurring, and the viscous system is more reliable than any electric fan by many orders of magnitude.
If the problem persists, we can then investigate further.
