He quoted 'designed in '86' and 'coming on for 20 years old'. Even around 2006 I thought they were worth more?

Not sure about his explanation of the reasoning behind the dogleg box.

He talks of a 20yr old car and the one he's driving is a 1987-88 one.

He was probably about right...in 2006/7 you could get a decent standard one for around £6500-7500...

But it was only in 2005 when I bought mine for under £4k

That was made some time ago because I have had my cab for 12 years now,I was looking at a M3 £4900 about the same sort of time.Yes I am kicking myself now!
They don't make bm's like this anymore!..They should.
