Must have had the V6 handy when the original went pop,
And lots of time on there hands,
And a handy scrappy,
And a strange morbid curiosity???

Ah well, each to there own.

not being purist at all. it just has to be a lot of work to get an engine with no clear benefit over a BMW lump.

V6 twin turbo etc transplant, no worries. V8, hell yeah! V(ish) 6 pot with only 190bhp and a load of work to do it? not for me ta.

M30, massive low end grunt and 20bhp more at the top end. simples

You can make the VR6 engine absolutely fly! Needs work though, mainly to the head, oh and some throttle bodies ;) 270bhp can be achieved without forced induction, and they howl well too.

Never underestimate a VR6, there are super quick ones out there lol.

I think the point people are making is why, but then again it's different.
Maybe money to waste????
I'm thinking why too, when you could have put in a BMW engine with more grunt for less money.

granted, they can make good power but like BMW engines, they need a load of cash thrown at them to do it.

being different is good...if ur building do something you cant buy off the shelf.
its sometimes boring to see something thats been done before, so in my eyes different is a gud thing lol

Same here, but on here if you do something different some people dont like it, but that does depend on whats been done.

You cant please people all the time so do what you think looks good, even if it does cost abit, and doesnt make much difference...

the vr6s sound nice, but are pretty crap in standrad for. however, therye very easy to supercharge for a lot more grunt for not that much cash.

why vr an e30? why not, plenty of people do things because they can or because they want to even if it's not the easy route, or makes no sense at all to anyone else!

possibly lighter than an m20, more compact with more of it's mass closer to the bulkhead?
cheers,

harry

VR6 power....

Up against a 300 bhp Seat Leon. This VR6 is in a Vento, done over 30 races and numerous test days and still pulling 270-275 bhp. I know.... I mapped it winkeye

Granted, it's alot of money to built one to this spec, but not as much as you may think :)

Anyway, I don't think it's practical in an E30 and there are better engines out there, but it'll be a giggle if nothing else.

Bit of a strange combination but there is method in the madness, the VR6 is a very compact engine, not much different in length to a 4 pot (hence it fitting in a Golf engine bay) so it'll keep the weight of the engine further back and help with inertia. Those engines are reasonably tuneable, same as an M20 really. You can take them out to 3.1 if you've got money or get a 24v head off a later V6 4motion etc. They make a seriously good noise, a cross between a V and a straight, strange that as they're inbetween the 2 at a 15deg Vee angle...

Ive had 3 VR6's. One being a 4wd syncro. Most OBD2 cars put out closer to 190bhp on the rollers rather than the stated 170 odd that the OBD1 cars put out. To be honest i only ever had one run up against a 325 and i left it in the VR.

Dont get me wrong, for a 2.8 frankly they are underpowered but as Paul says they are very tunable and sound mental on throttle bodies. Grant Motorsport is the man for the conversions on these and ive been in one. ITS MENTAL! Other options include a vortech supercharger kit which is about 2k all in you'll get around 300bhp and shit loads of toque or turbo conversion kits.... 600bhp.

Having dealt with Grantley a few years ago I have one word - AVOID. Other friends have also had severe issues with him and his work.

but what stumps me is the m52 and even the m20 are tuneable to over 500bhp with FI

the VR lump just does not makes sence, even if the engine was sitting there doing nothing

i'm all for engine swops and thinking out the box but there's no logic. some will argue you dont need to think logicaly but'd i beg to differ on this subject.

out of the box a VR performs much the same as an m20

tuning, well we all know whats availble for both but there is a lot more in terms of "off the shelf" for the VR but its a newer engine.

any way, lets see a picture so we know its true because this smells like a wind up
