Z3 Steering Rack
Moderator: martauto
Just fitted an LSD into the Red Shed Touring, took it for a blast around a quiet mini-island and it drifts a treat, other than the amount of fickin lock I have to keep dialling on with the standard 325 rack and the bus sized steering wheel, so I need a Z3 quick rack, and a smaller steering wheel, so where's a good place to source the rack and steering wheel from ?
Cheers
Dan, if you read this, the diff works really well.

Steering wheels come up on ebay all the time. Tech 2 or alpina or the like are the standard options. Also cheaper options from aftermarket suppliers on there. As for the z3 or e36 m3 racks and where to source them i am all ears too. Hope this helps
Online breakers. I'm trying but to no success yet. Many places don't like giving the steering racks out of cars that can be rolled around as taking the rack makes them immovable (without a lot more effort) but sometimes you get lucky.
Search Quarry Motors or BMW Parts Gateway and you'll find stuff. But remember me and other people are trying it at the same time!

Uni is killing the project.

I looked everywhere for a Z3 rack for about 3 months and I was prepared to pay over the odds for one but couldn't find one anywhere. In the end I put an E36 rack on it and it's a great improvement.
Good luck with the search

I've just purchased a 2004 E46 330 sport rack, supposedly 3 turns lock to lock.
Z3 ones are hard to find and I gave up, can't wait to get the E46 fitted

It was the Club Sport that had the 3 turn rack..
Thanks guys, I'll settle for an E36 rack as it seems a easier option.Daf318is wrote:I looked everywhere for a Z3 rack for about 3 months and I was prepared to pay over the odds for one but couldn't find one anywhere. In the end I put an E36 rack on it and it's a great improvement.![]()

How easy was the E36 rack to fit ? I've done searches on here and there seems to be a little confusion as to whether you need to change to the E36 lower intermediate shaft, or use the E30 one.
Cheers

I fitted mine to the forward holes and used the E30 Std linkage.
I fitted 14mm spacers above the rack
Bent the pipes
Done!!

the rack conversion is a pess of p. i yoused the frunt holes with 14 mm spacers from a metro seatbelt fixing. pas pipes wurnot had to bend but take yourtime. fantastic mod. tot moor bumpstear but worth it. have fun and good luck. oow i also yoused the standard e30 tirods. remove them with the rack on the car as ther tite wen the rack isnot held properly.
Yer i am sorry for my bad spelling. i am dislexic and find it just as hard to read your posts as you do mine.

Which breaker is this ? I live in Cov and I've not yet sorted out any breakers to have a look around.charlE30 wrote:Got it from a breakers in Coventry yesterday and it is most definitely 3 turns lock to lockJhonno wrote:Where did you find that? It was the Club Sport that had the 3 turn rack..Just been out and checked. He must have worded it incorrectly, he didn't specialize in BM's mostly french and jap so didn't know the correct term of 'Club Sport'
