It's a pain in the arse of a job !! I tasked it to my local garage to handle, as my time off from work is precious. Have a look at this techie article...

don't buy a ECP tank it's good secondhand or a new one from bmw but for the £450 they'd charge that narrows it down some.

I've used a couple of GSF tanks in the past with no problems, around £100

I fitted a tank from GSF to the touring last November. Paid less than £100 and it seemed to be well made. Do be sure that it is the tank that has failed and not the feed pipe... my tank had rusted at the point where the stub pipe enters the tank, from under the car I yanked on the rubber joining pipe and it came off in me hand...took me a day to strip and refit working off axle stands.

I replaced mine in an afternoon. There are no real pitfalls its just that you have to remove so many other bits to get to it.
Also beware if you buy a secondhand tank or even a new one at that, to ge tthe same tank as there are two different types (small / large ) they both fit, however if you are changing from one to the other you have to reroute some of the pipes and the senders are different as well.

It took me a day to replace mine with a GSF one, good fit no problems. Only five bolts hold it on, might as well been 500 with 20 years worth of corrosion on them! Follow the guide posted above its spot on.

So the GSF ones are good?
Thought i might as well get a new one for 85 than a secondhand one for 40,50,60 and then have to spend 30 quid on fuel to go get it not to mention wasting a Saturday morning to go get it!!!

Today i changed the fuel tank!
No issues just replaced a few hoses while it was out.
Started this morning at 1100 ish and had it done by 1930 along with the rear ARB links, wipers and changing the coolant, all in all a good day :D
