Joined up a little while back but had to survive with no BMW for a bit as my old 318 e30 died. I was getting an e39 but found out it was hotter than a hot thing in hot land. Then bought a rover.... 214..... Got another 318 e30 now!

However, it's done 125k and getting a bit long in the tooth with quite a few niggly problems. It makes more sense to scrap it. Originally i swapped my rover and £150 for it as I wanted a road legal track day car. I'm hoping to "move it on" in the near future for an e30 touring. I'm a bike mechanic by trade and decided it's a bit too expensive to have loads of cars and bikes so i was thinking of getting the "estate" version, mildly modify it a bit (respray, dtm spoiler, wheels subtle drop etc), add a tow bar and i can tow my new ktm when i get it.

Any ideas where i can source one as they seem to be a bit rare on the ground at the moment. Had a look at flea-bay but nothing much there, and in autotrader they are asking silly money. Or maybe there is someone out there that would be willing to px.....

Cheers!

welcome mate. the touring is the best option by far and good ones can be had for decent prices if you just take your time to sift through all the dross for that gem at the bottom.
for a guide i payed £1200 for my 325 mtec touring with 80000 miles.leather.lsd etc from a dealer.

Still looking for the touring but no luck so far. However, a mate of a mate has decided to sell his e30 318is. It's black, no mot, tax, the chassis and floor pan is really rusty. The body isn't too great either. But the mtec kit is on it and it also has the mtec suspension. So for the money I'm thinking of just buying a rolling package. Service the is engine and dump it into mine. I'm led to believe that the engine 318is engine out of an H reg e30 2door weill fit straight into the engine bay of a g reg e30 2 door.

What I'd basically like to know is will there a) be any pitfalls to this engine? or b) will there be any pitfalls to fitting the engine.

Don't stop at the engine! Drop the front and rear subframes out complete withe the engine and box, and transfer them to your shell.

A little update.

While helping a friend collect his car from Mazda in Maidstone I hit the most almighty pot hole. It was where the road surface comes away from around a drain grating. This was so deep you could see the brick underlay from the original road.

The long and short of it was that once i was able i jacked up the car, the anti roll bar was bent, the wheel was buckled, the bearing was shot and the strut had deformed in its top mount. The engine had been running really rough for a few weeks and now had all kinds of other issues, like an intermittent missmire and cold start problems.

As the car only cost me £150 to buy I decided to scrap it rather than to repair it as it would have been uneconomical to repair and replace the front suspension, power steering, wheel, and ultimately the engine as it was shagged.

Now i'm on the look out for a cheap little run a round as I'm now totally skint getting the train to work every morning. (I live in Orpington and Work in Chatham).

Unfortunately I have no proof of this pot hole as it has now been filled in!

Ultimately both project ideas are now on hold.
